The rural market's potential -- which is only 15 per cent as 24 million people own a two wheeler -- is reinforced by the two-wheeler segment approaching saturation point in the top 20 metroes (64 per cent) and other cities (60 per cent) coupled with the growing number of the target population -- capable of buying a two-wheeler, but not owning one -- from almost 140 million in FY-10 to almost 180 million in FY-14.
Announcing the results of the countrywide study here, Credit Analysis & Research (CARE) deputy managing director D R Dogra said ''Easy availibility of finance would be a critical factor in acheiving the said growth rate, as nearly half of two-wheelers sold in the country are through finance. Constraints in the supply side will also play a role in meeting expectations from the rural market.
While factors like improvement in infrastructure have been accounted for, the delay and weak monsoon can have a negative impact on the projections.'' The study also revealed that while market leader Hero Honda registered a healthy growth of 12 per cent in the domestic market in FY-09 over FY-08, others like Bajaj Auto and TVS saw sales dip by 23 per cent and 1.4 per cent respectively.
Long term sales projections showed a healthy growth rate of 7.8 per cent till FY-14 with motorcycles and gearless scooters dominating the market, followed by mopeds and electric two-wheelers.
The country's long standing staple -- the geared two-wheeler -- is expected to see sales slip into the negative zone.
In the export segment, motorcycles will also dominate sales and growth momentum would be maintained with the thanks to low cost, less requirement for customization and availibility of resources, said the report.
The industry's offshore markets will include Columbia (18 per cent), Sri Lanka (17 per cent), Nigeria (14 per cent), Philippines (10 per cent), Middle East (four per cent) and other developing nations in Africa and Latin America.

10% Increase In FMCG Rural Market Size Likely, Urban Size To Fall By 25%: ASSOCHAM
Sunday, August 05, 2007

An analysis undertaken by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) on FMCG in Perspective reveals that its market size in Rural and Semi-Urban segment is likely to jump up by 10% and 6% by 2010 as their younger population of approx. 180 million has already developed a special fascination for such products to further fuel the FMCG demand, particularly when this pocket’s income levels are rising and life patterns changing rapidly.

Currently, FMCG products rural market size is estimated at 52% which is projected to reach at 57% and grow by 10% in next 3 years as against 6% growth of semi-urban FMCG demand which might touch 21% level from present level of 19%, adds ASSOCHAM analysis.

However, in Urban India in which FMCG market size is currently estimated at 29% level is likely to come down to 22%, registering a fall of 25% as its consumer numbering about 120 million will renounce excessive FMCG products use to maintain their physique and shift away towards adoption of use of organic products, further adds ASSOCHAM.

It, however, cites reasons that growth in rural and semi-urban market size for FMCG products will be mainly rising population of youngsters in rural and semi-urban India which is already touched 180 million and has special attraction for FMCG products. Their temptation to use such products in volumes will grow mani-fold and fuel FMCG demands in this segment, said ASSOCHAM President, Mr. Venugopal N. Dhoot.

Secondly, FMCG companies rising sales in semi-urban and rural segment as their urban market acceptability is gradually weaning away as consumers in this segment are becoming more health conscious to keep them mentally fit to take on the onslaught of competition and shifting their consumption patterns more towards organic products rather than sticking on to packaged food.

The current FMCG urban market size is estimated at 29% which used to be more than 50% five years ago is likely to fall by 25% and stay around 22% by 2010, said Mr. Dhoot.

As per estimates made by ASSOCHAM analysis, the domestic FMCG total size in terms of volume is currently US$ 15 billion of which US$ 7.9 billion is rural contribution as against US$ 4.2 billion of urban and metros. US$ 2.85 billion is the semi-urban FMCG market.

The ASSOCHAM Chief who is also the leader in consumer durables, however, admitted that in 2006-07, the profitability of FMCG companies which on an average rose by 20% was more influenced by FMCG product sale in rural and semi-urban segment. This is indicative of the fact that FMCG urban base has been facing a serious challenge and that is why these are busy devising new ways and strategies to enlarge their rural and semi-urban sale to cater to rising demand.
