UNIT ONE: SCIENTIFIC METHOD REVIEW

SUMMATIVE PROJECT

By now you should be able to recite the Scientific Method in your sleep; BUT, can you create your own experiment using your own hypothetical question, conducting your own research, and interpreting your own data?

You will have two days from start to finish to do this. This project is due ______.

Here are the requirements:

  1. Your hypothesis must be approved by me before you start the project. I will be looking to see if the question is: timely, relevant, and do-able.
  2. Your experiment must be a project that can be done in two days (this includes the report, too); trying to grow seeds into plants, or similar projects, are therefore impossible.
  3. Your project should be based on a larger hypothesis that answers a question more complicated than a simple-step experiment. I will explain this further (just remember, I don’t want to see how many drops of water you can fit on a coin… I need you to be able to answer a bigger “Why is this important?”)
  4. Your data from the experiment must be chartable. A large portion of this project’s grade is based on how well you can gather, analyze, and interpret its data.

Creativity is fabulous! These are simple requirements, I want to see what you can do when your brain and heart go into a science project. Another suggestion, think about your passions- could you do an experiment on something related to it?

Attached is the rubric that will be used to grade your project. As always, if you need any help or clarification, just ask! I can’t wait to see what you create!

0-1: NOT MEETING EXPECTATIONS / 2: APPROACHING EXPECTATIONS / 3: MEETING EXPECTATIONS / 4: EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS
CREATIVITY / NO CREATIVITY OR PASSION SHOWN. PROJECT IS NOT ORIGINAL WORK. SIMPLE-STEP EXPERIMENT USED. / PROJECT SHOWS SOME INTEREST/CREATIVITY. PROJECT MAY STILL NOT BE AN ORIGINAL WORK. / PROJECT IS CREATIVELY ADDRESSED WITH AN UNIQUE EXPERIMENT AND HYPOTHESIS. / PROJECT IS CREATIVELY ADDRESSED WITH A UNIQUE EXPERIMENT AND MULTI-TIERED HYPOTHESIS.
RELEVANCY / PROJECT DOES NOT ANSWER BIGGER “WHY?” QUESTION. PROJECT DOES NOT HAVE AN APPLICABLE HYPOTHESIS. / PROJECT IS RELEVANT, BUT THE “WHY?” QUESTION IS NOT CLEAR. HYPOTHESIS IS ALSO NOT CLEAR OR INAPPRAORPIATE FOR THE EXPERIMENT. / PROJECT IS RELEVANT TO 8TH GRADE LEVEL KNOWLEDGE; STUDENT ANSWERS DEEPER “WHY?” QUESTION WITH A CLEAR HYPOTHESIS STATED. / PROJECT IS RELEVANT TO HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD; PROJECT REVOLVES AROUND DEEPER “WHY?” QUESTION WITH A CLEAR MULTI-TIERED HYPOTHESIS.
CHART / CHART IS MISSING COMPLETELY OR THERE IS TOO LITTLE INFORMATION TO ANALYZE ITS DATA. / CHART IS INCOMPLETE OR DATA IS NOT ORGANIZED/ANALYZED CLEARLY. / CHART IS COMPLETE AND ALL DATA IS GATHERED, ORGANIZED, AND ANALYZED. / DATA IS GATHERED, ORGANIZED, AND ANALYZED IN MULTIPLE CHARTS AND GRAPHS.
SCIENTIFIC METHOD / NONE OF THE STEPS OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD ARE USED; IF ANY ARE USED, THEY ARE NOT IN THE RIGHT ORDER OR/MISSING. / STEPS OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD ARE STATED, BUT MAY NOT BE CLEARLY ANSWERED/LABELED. / ALL STEPS TO THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD ARE ADDRESSED PROPERLY AND IN THE CORRECT ORDER. / INAPPLICABLE.
