MANIFESTO

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE

You pay your fees. You expect a service. Are you getting value for money?

I want to tackle the issues of:

·  Oversized classes, cancelled tutorials and a lack of resources

·  Limited library opening hours, extortionate fines and a £3000 price tag.

·  A non-existent Fresher’s’ Week and inadequate Welcome Orientation for new students.

Just where exactly is all our money going?

We deserve the education we’ve paid for!

10 SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON UNIVERSITY PROPERTY IN 12 MONTHS IS 10 TOO MANY

I will ensure that the ‘Fight for Light Campaign’ is sustained to make sure the University is properly lit at night.

I will provide:

·  Personal safety alarms to ALL students

·  Increase security on University grounds

·  Free self-defence classes at the beginning of each term

Make Queens go ‘Green’

The protection of our environment is the single most important issue facing our generation. Let’s make sure that Queen’s carbon footprint doesn’t stamp on our environment.

As your Deputy President, I will:

·  Install recycling points at the Students Union, Halls of Residence and the Seamus Heaney Library.

·  Ensure that the 2,000 bottles a week (approx) which are binned by the Union are instead recycled.

·  Promote an energy conservation drive to ensure lights are turned off and computers shut down within University buildings

Let’s truly make ‘Queen’s go green’!

The Continuing Fight for Fairtrade

In 2006 Queen’s University gained ‘Fair Trade Status’. Over 2,000 students petitioned to see this to happen.

I will fight to:

·  See this University honour the commitments it has made to its students and the Fair Trade Foundation

·  Ensure that private commercial services hired by this University adhere to Fair Trade standards that we students expect of Queen’s.

·  Encourage local coffee shops in the student area to stock Fair Trade products.

CELEBRATING DIVERSTIY

23% of students at Queen’s are from outside the UK. We should be doing more to support their needs.

I will lead the way in:

·  Establishing a network of support through a ‘Buddy’ scheme for international students

·  Creating an ‘International Student Society’ which will provide weekend and evening events.

·  Improving the international student involvement in Freshers Week and Welcome Orientation.

As DEPUTY PRESIDENT I will:

·  Ensure a better pay system for all part-time staff within the Union. The present monthly system is not working, and needs urgently addressed!

·  Produce the Student Newspaper to a higher quality, while also ensuring that all other forms of media within the union, whether print or radio also have the support and assistance required to help produce the journalists of tomorrow.

·  Establish better communications within the Union between Students, Staff, SSCC Reps, Student Council and all Clubs and Society’s. By creating a more transparent Union we can help ensure that the real issues, not petty politics are continuity addressed throughout the year.
