Art I: TheArt I course is designed as an entry level course for the Visual Arts pathway. Emphasis will be upon exploring multicultural concepts of what constitutes art, functions and themes of art, art history, aesthetic issues, and art criticism. Students will also explore the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design in order to develop visual literacy andapply the aforementioned in creating and understanding art. This course will consist of multiple components intended to enable the student to explore, discuss, critique, and create art. Students will experience various art forms and environments via class trips and guest speakers. Art I is process oriented rather than product oriented.

Objectives: Completion of the Art I course will serve as a base for future endeavors in the Visual Arts pathway. Learners will possess the rudimentary skills and vocabulary necessary in the pursuit of visual literacy. Objectives are defined in syllabus.

Prerequisite: OPEN MINDS!

Suggested Grade Level: Open to grades 9-12

Materials and equipment required: There will be an Art I kit assembled which will include a sketchbook, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpener and fine point markers. Cost will be approximately $15.00.

Grading Scale:

A Superior 100-93B Good 92-85

C Average 84-77 D Poor 76-70

F Failing 69-0

Homework: Students will be required to complete homework assignments on time. There will be a 2pts. Deduction for each day work is not turned in.

Make-up work: Students are responsible for inquiring about missed work due to excused absences and will have a reasonable amount of time allotted in order to make-up work. Students who miss work due to administrative concerns, field trips, or other reasonable event will be held to the aforementioned policy. Those students with unexcused absences will not be allowed to make-up work.

Attendance Policy: Students must adhere to the school attendance policy. Tutoring: Tutoring is available Mon-Thurs from 3:20-5:00 pm. Rides must be here promptly at 5:00pm.

Student Conduct: Students are required to follow all policies outlined in the handbook as well as the art room policies. Students are responsible for the studio and should comport themselves in a professional and respectful manner. The CCHS disciplinary code will be utilized including, but not limited to, verbal and non-verbal warning, student conference, parent conference, demerits and Honor Court.
