8th grade integrated science
Title: Core Mastery Tracker
Description: The tracker is designed for students to measure and record their progress as they learn the state core curriculum.
Materials: It should be used with the Multiple choice tests found on the JSD science website.
Time needed: 25 minutes
Procedures:
1. Explain to the students that this is a test to see what they know. It is recommended you do NOT collect scores for the student’s grade. The goal is the help the students understand what they know and don’t know in a low stakes environment. The tests can be used as pre and post tests to measure student growth in an objective.
2. Have the students take the multiple choice parts of the test. If you wish to use the essay questions, they are not correlated to the tracker but can help students assess what they know in a different way.
3. The number in parenthesis indicates how many test questions are found on the test to measure the indicator. Each test question has a letter in front of it to show which indicator it matches. Have the students check one of the three boxes to the right of the indicator based on the number they got correct. They can judge if 6 of 8 is a “got it” or not.
4. The teacher may walk around the room and look at the trackers to get a good idea of which indicators may need additional instruction.
5. Students with difficulty with a particular topic may need additional help. Several resources are available including:
· Their textbook. It might help if you identified the pages that would help. If a parent is interested in helping their child, this is an excellent way to include them.
· The Internet. Help the student will key words that might aid the search. A great source of help is on the Utah Science Homepage. It is the “cybertext” and is accessed at: http://www.schools.utah.gov/curr/sci/student/default.htm
· Pair the student with a more successful student to review classroom activities.
6. Students should be allowed to take and retake the parts of the test they have not mastered. The goal is “got it” for every objective.
