SECTION 1 - General Roles and Responsibilities

The Lead Residential Waking Night Support Workershall be responsible for the following:

  1. Promote the rights of residents to be treated with dignity and respect in every aspect of their lives.
  1. Establish supportive relationships with residents and encourage the development of stable relationships between:
  • residents and other staff,
  • residents and their families and friends
  • other residents and peers within St John’s.
  1. Promote the emotional health and self-esteem of residents and support them through changes in living circumstances and personal relationships.
  1. Support resident young people in making their own choices and decisions to the maximum of their capability, and ensure that the needs and wishes of residents are fully considered in any decision relating to them.
  1. Ensure the protection of residents from significant harm, by exercising vigilance, observing changes in the residents’ behaviour or appearance, and complying fully with St John’s Safeguarding policy, Professional Boundaries Policy and any Protection Plans

SECTION 2 – Specific Roles and Responsibilities

1.Residential

a)Remain awake and alert at all times to ensure the safety and welfare of residents in residence throughout the night.

b)Be fully aware of the fire drill and emergency procedures in all houses, including arrangements for ‘on call’ contacts

c)Undertake security checks of the premises throughout the night.

d)Assist residents with self-care independence skills including eating, drinking, washing, bathing, using the toilet or managing incontinence, dressing and undressing, mobility and transport, getting up and going to bed, and the administration of medication.

e)Participate in the assessment, development, implementation and review of placement/care plans for residents.

f)In partnership with the care team, participate in the promotion of the health, welfare, emotional and social development of residents.

g)In partnership with the residential team promote the educational attainment of residents by contributing to the development of Individual Learning Plans and supporting the residents in working towards agreed educational targets in the residential units.

h)In partnership with the residential team promote the communication skills of residents.

i)Participate in the assessment, development, implementation and review of programmes aimed at enabling residents to manage their challenging behaviour.

j)Ensure that resident’s files are updated (where appropriate) accurate and maintained.

k)Work as a member of the staff team, co-operating fully and communicating openly and effectively with other team members.

l)To undertake and ensure that the kitchens and common areas are cleaned and well maintained.

m)To undertake laundry including washing, drying and ironing.

n)Store and transmit information and maintain accurate records in accordance with organisational policy, and ensure that any information concerning the health, welfare and development of a resident is accurately communicated to colleagues and managers. Ensure log books are accurately updated and incident reports and paperwork are completed as required.

o)At the start of a shift, ensure that night staff read and understand the communication book and daily log sheets and liaise with staff on duty at handover times so that information on the needs of learners is properly recorded and acted upon.

p)To support residents entering St John’s for the first time, moving between residential units or leaving the service, enabling them to prepare for the change, and to become familiar with the new environment and responding to any distress they may experience.

q)Assist residents with independent self-care skills including eating, drinking, washing, bathing, using the toilet or managing incontinence, dressing and undressing, mobility and transport, getting up and going to bed, and the administration of medication.

r)Support the night team to have input into the monitoring, review and implementation of placement/care plans.

s)In partnership with each house team and the medical and therapeutic staff, participate in the promotion of the health, welfare, emotional and social development of residents.

t)When requested act as designated responsible Health and Safety person, thereby participating in the assessment of risk, reporting matters of concern to managers and complying in full with duties under the organisations Health and Safety policy.

2.Line Management

a)Under the direction of the Night Manager, act as shift leader across care houses to ensure that all duties are carried out to a high standard and staff are allocated clear duties and responsibilities during that shift.

b)As required undertake to be on-call whilst off duty.

c)Allocate work to the Night team and individuals, agreeing objectives and work plans, assessing the performance of individuals and giving appropriate feedback to individuals and management.

d)Maintain effective staff discipline, operating at all times within the organisations Disciplinary policies and procedures.

e)Undertake agreed specific staff supervisory responsibilities, such as staff supervision, APR’s and induction of less experienced staff, maintaining all required records and complying with the organisations supervision policy.

f)To undertake as required, investigations into misconduct, poor practice by staff or serious incidents involving injuries to staff or learners or any issue that may impact on the health and safety of learners and staff & visitors.

g)Under the direction of the Night Manager ensure all shifts are adequately covered each night, across the service.

h)Ensure that the Night team are aware of the contractual agreement to stay awake whilst on shift and carry out regular checks to ensure this is happening.

i)Liaise regularly with the Night Manager, Care Managers and Lead Residential Support Workers and handover information regarding the night time routine of learners.

3.Staff development and training

a)Continuously reflect on own practice and seek to develop skills, making full use of supervision.

b)Support new staff during their induction periods and assist them to become familiar with their role and the needs of residents, then feedback relevant and accurate information regarding performance to managers.

c)As appropriate offer professional leadership in a delegated area of young people care practice, reporting to line manager as required.

d)Disseminate experience and knowledge to the staff team as necessary, thus ensuring the high quality of care and interventions used by team members.

5.Personal and Professional Development

a)To undertake further training commensurate with role.

b)To keep updated in all matters of care and safeguarding, legislation and practice.

c)To attend supervision sessions with the Night Care Manager and other organisational meetings as required.
