Computer basics:

Define the term computer.

What are its primary functions?

Hardware – Physical elements of the computer.

Parts of a Computer:

Processing: CPU – Central Processing Unit

Brains of the computer-

Memory:

RAM – Random Access Memory

Volatile.

Contains opened programs and files.

Storage:Hard disk – Computer’s internal storage device.

USB stick, CDs.

Other examples.

Input: Keyboard – For entering text.

Mouse – For selecting from displayed options.

Output: Printer – Generates hard copies.

Monitor – More interactive device.

Images displays by a series of pixels.

Software:

Programs – set of instructions that tell the computer what to do.

Data (raw facts) – Information (has meaning).

Systems Software:

Operating systems and supporting programs.

Microsoft Windows – operating system.

GUI – Graphical User Interface.

User Interface allows you to communicate with the computer.

Multitasking – The ability to run multiple programs at the same time.

OLE – Object Linking and Embedding

Elements of Windows:

Desktop – Screen background. Displayed once a computer has booted up.

Shortcut icons – Pointers to the programs they indicate.

Icons for shortcuts contain an arrow in the bottom, left corner.

Taskbar – Located at the bottom of the screen.

START button – Used to locate and open programs.

All Programs – shows all programs installed on your computer.

Quick Launch Toolbar - Fast access to frequently used commands.

Open Window Buttons – Used to restore ‘shut’ windows.

Can click on buttons to switch between opened windows.

Notification Area – Holds icons for ‘systems orientated’ programs, such as anti-virus, Windows updates, wireless connection, and Safely Remove Hardware – Used to close a portable media device.

Standard MS/Windows elements:

My Documents - Default storage location for files.

My Computer – Shows all elements on the computer.

Recycle Bin – Holds files that have been deleted from fixed drives on your computer.

Help and Support

Parts of a Window (as in Windows Explorer):

Borders – Drag the double arrow mouse pointer to resize window.

Title bar – Drag title bar to move a window.

Office button – what commands does it hold?

Quick Access Toolbar – By default, contains the Undo command.

Window Title – File name

Minimize – ‘shuts’ the window to button on task bar. Both file and application remain running.

Maximize/Restore – changes the size of the window

Close – ends the application program. Does give option to save any changes.

Tabs –

Help button -

Menu list – list of commands or options.

Submenus – list under menu list – Point to them with a mouse to open.

Ellipsis (…) – Indicates more information is needed to perform the command.

When selected, a dialog box comes up.

Dialog Boxes –

Title bar –

Blue question mark – help

Opens a Help Search Window where keywords can be looked for.

X – Close dialog box

Status Bar –

Changes to Windows Setting with Control Panel:

Change language.

Change date and time.

Selecting a custom picture – Browse to locate.

My Computer –

Search button – help locate files

Folder button – display all storage devices on the computer

View button – control how items and represented and how much information is given on the screen.

Windows Explorer - Displays a tree structure of the devices on your system.

Used to perform the following tasks:

-Search -Rename – Copy -Move - Delete.

Know how to perform each of these commands.

How do you know if a folder has been expanded? How do you collapse a folder?

Locating Files/Folders –

Folders – Contain files and subfolders.

Plus sign (+) shows that a folder contains subfolders.

Click on + to expand –

Click on – to collapse -

Copy vs. Move:

Copy – recreates a file in a new location and retains the file in the existing location as well.

Move – deletes the file from one location and copies it to another location.

Backing up a file:

Backup – A copy of your file on a different storage device.

Good backup strategy includes:

-How?When?Where?What?

-Store them in location away from your computer.

Delete a File.

Send a file to the Recycle Bin (if on a fixed storage device)

Immediately, permanently deletes files on removable storage devices.

Delete a Folder.

All subfolders and files are deleted to.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Restore a file from the Recycle Bin.

Other Systems level software not included in Windows:

Anti-Virus software – Protects your computer from computer viruses.

Computer Viruses – Programs created to do harm.

To avoid them, don’t download or save files from unknown Web sites.

FTP – File Transfer Protocol

Sending and receiving files over the Internet.

File Compression –

Saving space when send and storing files.

Internet:

World wide connection of computer networks.

URL – The web site address.

Know the parts:

- Protocol – http.

- Domain name – Server computer.

Last three letters are the domain type.

Examples: com, org, edu.

-Path

-Filename.

Web Browser – Program that is needed to view web pages from a Web Server.

Example: Internet Explorer.

Security on the www:

https – Security protocol – Used to show that the site is secure.

A padlock icon on the taskbar also indicates this security.

Copyrighted information:

Legally cannot be copied from the www and used by you without giving credit.

E-Commerce – conducting business transactions over the Internet.

HTML – Hyper-Text Markup Language.

Language used to create Web pages.

Related web pages make up websites.

Hyperlinks (indicated by pointing hand icon) move from one location to another.

What is your Home Page?

What are hyperlinks? How do they relate when surfing the Web?

Searching the Web:

- Search Engines – How do they work and give examples.

What makes a good search argument?

Be able to perform a search.

Loading Pages:

Web pages are temporarily loaded onto your computer the first time you visit them.

Speeds up the reload process.

Refresh – To reload the page from the server.

What are the following?

Cookies – Small data files placed on your computer by Web server.

Created to make on-line shopping easier.

Favorites – Help you organize URLs and frequently visited sites.

You have to add to.

History list – Site visited.

Favorites list – Site you add to find again later.

Phishing – sending e-mails in an attempt to acquire personal information.

Looks legitimate – From a bank or financial institution.

Internet Communications:

E-mail – electronic mail.

Blog – Web log – personal journal, maintained online.

IM – Instant message

Office Fundamentals:

Microsoft Office Suite is composed for the following applications:

Word –Word processor – File extension - .docx

Excel –Spreadsheets - .xlsx

Access –Database - accdb

PowerPoint– Presentation graphics - .pptx

Universal Tasks:

SAVE AS – Always done first time a file is saved.

From RAM to storage.

Provide: Location – Where to store. (Save in box)

Name – (Filename box)

Type of file – (Save As version box)

Default: Saves to MY Documents

File names –

Rules.

SAVE – from RAM to storage.

Uses previously given name.

OPEN – from storage to RAM.

File becomes active.

Provide: Location, which file.

PRINT -

Print Preview – Displays the output to the screen.

HELP – Blue question mark.

Located on the tab line and on dialog boxes.

Help Search box – Allows you to type in a keyword and locates help info.

Selecting text:

Drag across so edit and formatting commands only affect that portion of the text.

Mini toolbar displays when selection is made.

Text Level Operations:

Moving around a file.

- Scrolling. - Movement keyboard keys.

Adding text: Insert vs. Overtype modes.

Deleting text:

Delete key

Backspace key

Block delete – Selecting text.

- drag across text.

- double click – word.

- triple click – paragraph or table cell.

- Shift + arrows – selects one character, row, etc at a time.

Note: when text is selected, Mini toolbar is displayed.

Formatting text:

Fonts – style and size of text.

Emphasizing – text appearance.

Includes: Bold, Italics, Underline, Color, etc.

Editing text:

Copying text: Creates a duplicate copy of the information on the clipboard.

COPY / PASTE

Clipboard – temporary memory location for holding data that has been cut or copied.

Moving text: Relocates a file to a new location. Removes from original file.

CUT / PASTE

Paste – Bring information in from the clipboard to the current location in the file.

Copying Formats: FORMAT PAINTER – copies the format codes, but not the text.

Undo and Redo commands:

Where are they located?
Find – locates a string of text.

Find and Replace: Locate a string of text and replace it with another string.

Go to – Locating a position within the file.

Reviewing text:

Spell Checker:

Red underlining indicates misspelled word.

Grammar Checker:

Green underlining.

Thesaurus:

Provides synonyms.
