M25 Widening Junctions 16-23

Construction update – South Mimms area – June-October 2011

From 31 May 2011, preparations have been under way to extend the widening work through to junction 23. Widening of the clockwise verge will continue until the end of September 2011. We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause.

Traffic arrangements on the motorway

Until approximately 13 June, we will install the traffic management system of steel barriers. These barriers will control traffic between junctions 21-23 until the end of September 2011. This process takes place at night, and can be noisy. We complete as much as we can in a night shift and the whole process takes approximately 15 working nights.

Traffic on the clockwise carriageway will be restricted to lanes 1 and 2. Lane 3 will run in contraflow on the anti-clockwise carriageway. Keep to lanes 1 and 2 to exit at junction 22 and junction 23. The contraflow lane will not allow you to exit at both these junctions.

Traffic on the anti-clockwise carriageway will use the hard shoulder, because lane 3 will be used by the clockwise contraflow lane. Junctions 22 and 23 will be available.

Three lanes of traffic in both directions will be kept open during peak times.

Widening work scope until end May 2012

  • 3-lane to 4-lane throughout
  • discontinued hard shoulder at bridges
  • retaining walls & regraded slopes (including limited stretches of sheet piles)
  • new verge-side lighting
  • new gantries & variable message signs
  • improved drainage
  • improved technology

Working at night and advance notifications

Night-time work is involved, particularly with regard to

  • earthwork filling of embankments
  • building concrete retaining walls and slot drains
  • road surfacing
  • lane closures
  • slip road closures

In order to ensure the safety of both our workers and the travelling public, certain work must be carried out at night when traffic flows are lighter. Where possible, night-time work is restricted to 150m from housing.

It will be necessary to close the exit slip roads from time to time. Signs on the slip roads themselves will advise of the closure dates and times. You can also check the Highways Agency website using the Traffic Management link for current information

South Mimms landscape area construction site – work under way for 18 months

By the end of 2012, the new landscape will be completed to form an artificial hill, or bund. This new shape will help to screen much of the village from the noise of the motorway, and to provide a visual screen.

The work on this site will vary over time. For much of the period, earthmoving vehicles and equipment will be depositing and removing material from and to the motorway. We will also temporarily store some material for use in the road construction process. Around the edge of the field we have stored the original topsoil and subsoil from the field. At the end of the process, these storage mounds will be redistributed over the new shape, and the field will return to agriculture.

We will do our best to minimise disruption from noise, dust, mud and night lighting in the neighbourhood.
