Our School Day

8:05 – 3:15

Students arriving after 8:05 are tardy. They must be checked in at the office by an adult.

Students arriving at school before 7:30 and students who are eating breakfast need to be dropped off at the front porch. They will be supervised in that area and sent to breakfast. At 7:45 students will be sent to their classrooms.

Students arriving after 7:30 who are not eating breakfast may be dropped at the second grade doors. They will also be supervised there and sent to their classrooms at 7:45.

Cafeteria

Breakfast is served at 7:30 each day. Second grade lunches run from 11:55 to 12:55 with classes arriving every 5 minutes. Your child’s teacher will give you an exact lunch time for her class.

Parents are welcomed to come and eat with their students. There will be tables designated in the cafeteria for students with company. Parents may not take additional students from the class to eat with their child.

Student Grades Online

Parents may view student grades online through our parent portal at www.gatesvilleisd.org. After completing the online training, contact the office for your password that will allow you to log-in and access your student’s grade at any time.

·  Honor Roll awards will be given each six-weeks for students scoring 90 or above in all subject areas.

·  Perfect Attendance awards are given for students who attend every day, all day of the six-week grading period. Students may not be tardy, leave and return, or leave before dismissal in order to receive this award.

·  Daily Planners will be provided to each student to facilitate communication between school

and home. Students will take their planners home and return them to school daily. Parents need to read and sign the planner daily.

·  Fine Arts Class – Students will have a Fine Arts Class this year which will include instruction in art, music, and drama.

·  Accelerated Reader is used in second grade to develop independent readers and help to prepare students for the third grade STAAR test. Students are assigned an appropriate level for their reading and given class time daily to read independently and test on AR books. Students do not test on books read at home. The AR grade counts as 25% of the reading grade each six-weeks.

·  PE– Students will be participating in a PE class daily. Please be sure that your student is dressed for exercise and running activities each day. Tennis shoes are recommended daily.

·  Spelling – Students will learn to spell words by using phonics patterns this year. All second grade classes will study the same spelling words each week with testing at the end of the week. Spelling words and games for practice are available weekly at www.spellingcity.com. Click on “find a list” and search by the teacher’s last name.

·  Science Lab – Second grade has added science lab this year. Students will go to science lab weekly for hands-on activities to support science instruction in the classroom.
