SOUNDSCAPEPROGRAM GUIDELINESAND APPLICATION FORM
FOR ARTISTS

Section 1 – Guidelines

Background

Soundscape is a proud initiative of the Adelaide City Council to forge deeper relationships and connections with the arts community and general public byincluding sound artwithin the Council’s public art program.

Adjacent to the contemporary visual art displayed in the Art Pod, Soundscape further enlivens the breezeway at 25 Pirie Street, creating a sense of place for contemporary art and creativity in the City. It will delight both visitors and unsuspecting audiences with a multi-dimensional artistic experience and will offer the public the opportunity to encounter an additional and unexpected art form.

Located in a publicly accessible,high-traffic pedestrian thoroughfare, the area is accessible 24/7 and is exposed to as many as 2 – 3,000 passers-by each weekday and 1,000 passers-by on weekends, giving exhibiting artists exposure to a plethora of untapped audiences.

Guidelines for Sound Artworks

Sound artwork commissioned for the program is envisaged to be subtle, with sound contributing a gentle addition to the current array of street and pedestrian sounds within the space. It can be thought-provoking,playful, enlightening, surprising and positive, delivering an unanticipated form of contemporary art to peoples everyday lives.

Sound works will be looped for continuous play over the exhibition period. The length of the work will be at the discretion of the artist and commensurate to the commission rate.

As the artworks will be broadcast in a public space, thus exposed to the general public (including children etc.), common sense regarding content is required. Adelaide City Council will not support artwork content containing profanity, racism, sexism etc.All artworks commissioned will be reviewed and subsequently approved at the discretion of the Public Art Consultant.

Program Scope

Sound artworks for the program will be commissioned through an open call to artists via Public Art’s Art in the City e-newsletter with details of the opportunity listed on the Public Art Opportunities web page at the time of the call out. Applications will be accepted from individual artists or artist groups.

Artists Fee

Commissioned sound artists/artist groups will be contracted and paid a total of $1,000(ex. GST) to produce the sound work, generally within a 6 week period unless specified or agreed upon otherwise. Commissioned artists will be engaged via a written agreement and will be required to provide feedback at the end of their exhibition period via written response to a short questionnaire. Interested artists are welcome to request an example of either or both documents prior to submitting their application.

Exhibition Periods

The exhibition of sound works will be scheduled in-between EC exhibitions that incorporate a sound component. The period of broadcast will be 6 - 8 weeks in length, but could be more or less, depending on the EC exhibition schedule.

Evaluation Criteria

Applicants to Soundscape will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Proposed concept for work is conducive to the locale in terms of the work’s relative dynamic (i.e. volume), structure and aesthetic. See ‘Guidelines for Sound Artworks’ pg 1
  • Artistic merit as evidenced in support material provided with application
  • Demonstrated ability to develop concepts and communicate ideas
  • Demonstrated ability to create work that engages with the public
  • Demonstrated ability to work within program requirements, including content, project budget and timeline

Important note:

Scheduling priority will be given to the visual artists exhibiting in the Art Pod as part of the Emerging Curator (EC) program (whose work includes a sound component) due to the synonymous nature of the gallery and the locations of the speakers in the breezeway. In this circumstance, sound works will be conceptually integral to the visual art shown or be the audio component of a moving image artwork being screened.

The breezeway is directly adjacent to the Adelaide City Council’s customer centre. The sound equipment is accessible from within the Art Pod, with two speakers mounted outside on the ceiling of the breezeway.
