Genesis 1:26- 3:24 Week 6 Discussion Questions

Eve

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.” Genesis 3:6

Read Genesis 1:26- 2:25

1. Describe life in the Garden of Eden (use your imagination, as well as the specifics given in Scripture.) What were the surroundings? What did they eat? What were their daily activities? What were relationships like (between man and woman, between God and his 2 human creations)?

2. Why do you think God gave Adam instructions about what he could and could not eat (vv. 16-17)?

Read Genesis 3:1-24

3. Adam and Eve had perfect surroundings, perfect relationships, perfect provision—all of their needs met by God’s loving care. Yet they still wanted more. Why? In our world today, we often desire things that are unhealthy or even good things that are not meant to be the center of our attention. Give some examples (think of your own cravings, the ones that tempt you most.)

4. Referring to 3:1-5, what specific tactics did Satan use to lure Eve into sin, and how does he use these same strategies today?

5. In 3:6, what 3 qualities did Eve see in the fruit that intensified her desire for it? What were the cravings of her heart that she sought to satisfy? What do those cravings look like in today’s world and how do people try to satisfy them?

6. What were the immediate and long-term consequences of Eve’s (and Adam’s) decision to step outside of God’s will and do things her own way?

7. Referring to 3:14-15, what did God say to the serpent? How did He ultimately fulfill His promise (see Hebrews 2:14)?

8. Read 1 John2:15-17. John addresses the same 3 temptation points that Satan used against Eve: the cravings of sinful man (physical pleasure), the lust of his eyes (materialism), and the boasting of what we have and do (significance). Which of these 3 areas of temptation is the enemy’s greatest lure against you, and how do you seek to fight against it?

9. Read Matthew 4:1-11. How did Jesus respond when the enemy tried to tempt him, and what do you learn from Jesus’ response?

As we close, I’m reminded of Psalm 37:3-4. This is my prayer for all of us: “Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe passage. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Amen!
