58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot

Detachments sent to Australia and and Norfolk Island in June 1844

[58th Regiment of Foot, RutlandShire Regiment, AJCP Roll 3827, piece 6744, WO 12, Musters and Payrolls] 1

The following information was recorded whilst the author was researching a convict ancestor (Thomas SMART), and looking for the names of the Regimental detachment on board the Convict ship Lord Auckland, which arrived in Hobart on 15th November 1844. In “How to trace your military ancestors in Australia and New Zealand ”by R.H. Montague, published by Hale & Iromonger, the Regiment’s time in Tasmania is not mentioned, but it is shown as being stationed at Sydney for a few months prior to being involved in the first Maori war in New Zealand in 1845, returning to Sydney in 1846, then back to New Zealand in 1847, again fighting in the Maori wars. It’s strength was approximately 1207 men. In the British Army at that time recruits were accepted from 9 years old and received Boy’s wages until age 15, when they received Men’s wages. They could then be pensioned at 29 years of age @ 10/6 per week!

The following names were lifted from the Pay Lists of the 58th Regiment for the period 1st April 1844 to 30th June 1844, at its Depot at Chatham, which notes that Headquarters embarked for Van Diemen’s Land (VDL) in May. The Regiment embarked from April to July, going to New South Wales, VDL, and Norfolk Island. There does not seem to be a separate Pay List record for the VDL detachment after their arrival, although one exists for Norfolk Island for a later date, most of whom went on to New Zealand. The records do not stipulate which ships the Regiment travelled on (except in 2 instances).

The Hobart Mercury newspaper report of the arrival of the “Lord Auckland” mentions Lt. Westropp, Ensign Peddler and 50 rank and file, 7 women and 13 children, 58th Regiment. As the Pay List says Lt. Westropp was going to Norfolk Island I have lifted the names of all who embarked for VDL and Norfolk Island (NI) in June. Two embarked on the Convict Ship “Emily” on 14 June 1844, so perhaps all those embarked on the 14th June went on her. No other ship is mentioned. Also, the Surgeon’s Sick Book report for the “Lord Auckland” lists several members of the Regiment, and a cross-reference shows names of those who embarked on 17th, 20th and 21st June. It would therefore be reasonable to assume that the Regiment was spread out over a number of ships as guard detachments to the convicts.

Although the newspaper report mentions Lt. Westropp, it does not mention Captain Russell, who embarked, along with Ensign Peddler, on the 17th June for VDL, however, the Surgeon’s report describes ‘..two Commissioned Officers and 50 rank officers..’. I have therefore listed all the names below, as a guide for other researchers. It is not infallible and I have possibly missed some names, e.g. the Surgeon’s report has three names I do not have (Bastow, Mahan and O’Callaghan), all others mentioned in his report are on the lists, although with some different first names and some mis-spellings, e.g. I have John Pedmond, the Surgeon has John Redmond. Pedmond is correct as the Pay Lists are in alphabetical order, unless I missed a ‘Redmond’.

The “Lord Auckland” commenced receiving her prisoners on board from Millbank prison on 1st July 1844, embarkation being completed on 11th July. She sailed on the 16th July 1844 with 238 males convicts, together with a guard of 2 Commissioned Officers and 50 rank officers. The ship arrived in Hobart Town on 15th November 1844, with no stops on the way. Two convicts died on the voyage. (From the Surgeon-Superintendent’s Report - General Remarks - Surgeon John I Lancaster.)

The Regimental Pay Lists handwriting is legible, surnames are spelt as in the Lists, and first names are written in full or abbreviated exactly as in the photocopy of the original.

The list is in date of embarkation order, then alphabetically by rank (as in the Pay Lists) .

There was at least one embarkation for July which I didn’t record, not realizing that the ship did not sail until 16 July 1844.
