Dear Families,

Just a peak into our week…

Visit from Mrs. Abrams – As a representative from the State College Rotary Club,Mrs. Abrams visited our classroom to share the importance of service work and to distribute dictionaries to each learner. The students loved her visit and have been exploring the many facts offered in their new resource. Ask your third grader to share some of the cool topics they found in their dictionary.

Friendship/Valentine Day Celebration – Tuesday, February 14th at 2:00. All supplies, snacks and volunteers are accounted for. If your third grader would like to exchange valentines please help him/her make sure they have one for each student. I have attached a class list

Eisenhower Field Trip –Tuesday, February 14th - Dance Production

101ST Day of School – Today we celebrated Palindromes by recognizing our 101st day of school. Can your child share a few of our discoveries?

Language Arts – The students are wrapping up their informational writing pieces. This week focused on preparing a conclusion paragraph and a few typing tips in preparation for publishing their pieces. Next week we will address peer editing, revisions, “polishing” their work, and finally printing their work! Great job third graders!

Reading Focus – Students are recognizing text features, using visualization as a means for building comprehension, and “synonym checks” to aid in determining the meaning of unknown vocabulary. Ask you son/daughter to explain how they use “synonym checks.”

STEAM Fair - Tuesday, February 21from6:00 pm – 8:00 pmin the All Purpose Room.Projects should be dropped off onMonday, February 20between3:00 pm and 6:30pmin the All Purpose Room.

Water Bottle Collection - We collected 344 bottles last week! We have one more week. We are beyond our goal of 600. A final countwill be takentoday.

Math – Exploration of volume, capacity and a continuation of word problem practice and strategy sharing. Keep on practicing those facts

Social Studies – Egyptian art is fascinating! We are using the grid system to enlarge an elaborate tomb painting from this time period. Each student has his or her own section of the painting. We will be sure to share photos of the process on our web page.

Science – We are wrapping up our kinetic and potential energy focus. Next week we will explore electricity.

Please continue to encourage your child to read every day. Askspecific questions about their text (i.e. “What are some character traits that you notice?” and “Can you find evidence from the text to support your answer?”). We enjoy working and learning with our class. Thank you for sharing your third grader with our room 81 community!
