In his training seminars and keynote presentations, Darrell “Flash” Gordon draws upon his many remarkable life experiences, from the football field at Notre Dame to the corporate board room.

Current Endeavors

Nonprofit CEO: Today, Darrell is Chief Executive Officer of a multimillion dollar youth organization, the Wernle Children’s Home in Richmond Indiana. Wernle's CEO since 2001, Darrell oversees all aspects of the organization. A residential treatment center for children struggling with serious emotional problems, Wernle is not just a job for Darrell – it is his passion. He says, "To finally see those youth have hope is what I strive for." Darrell’s goal is to put the pieces together, to make it possible for Wernle residents to get better.

Television host: Darrell hosts Joy in Our TownTV show in the Richmond, IN area, discussing social and economic change issues, youth development, and many other topics.

Motivational speaker: Putting his varied experiences to work, Darrell inspires businesses, nonprofits, schools, sports clubs, and other organizations at conferences, conventions, professional and community events. His energy, excitement, humor, and wisdom combine to motivate groups of all kinds to achieve bigger and better things.

Early Successes

Sports Acclaim

Knute Rockne, Lou Holtz, Joe Theismann, Rocky Bleier, Jerome Bettis, The Four Horsemen… all of these names are synonymous with University of Notre Dame football and the university’s commitment to excellence both on and off the field.

As an outside linebacker for the Fighting Irish during the 1980’s, Darrell continued the university’s tradition. A key leader on the football field, he helped lead the team to a national championship as a starter at the 1988 Fiesta Bowl. Darrell also played in the 1989 Hula Bowl All-Star game with the likes of Deion Sanders, Derek Thomas, and Troy Aikman.

Career Beginnings

After graduating from Notre Dame, Darrell’s life journey led him along many paths, starting with a Wall Street internship at the New York Stock Exchange. From there, Darrell held managerial positions in the private sector, was a graduate school professor at Ball State University, clerked with a prominent Cincinnati law firm, worked with the sports management firm IMG, and found a career with the NCAA, where he coordinated the "Stay in Bounds" program that promotes sportsmanship among youth.

Education

Darrell’s hard work extends far beyond the gridiron. In addition to a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business, Darrell earned a Master's degree of Science and Administration from the University of Notre Dame. He earneda Juris Doctorate from Northern Kentucky's Chase College of Law in 1997, and also successfully completed the Strategic Perspective in Non-Profit Management executive education program at Harvard Business School.

Awards

  • Notre Dame awarded Darrel with the William D. Reynolds Award in recognition of his work for the betterment of the quality of life for youth.
  • Chase College of Law honored Darrell with the Exceptional Service Award, which recognizes those graduates of the Chase College of Law who exhibit the ideals of the law school through daily contributions of service.
