·  Course Overview

This course constitutes the first out of a three semester long sequence in Calculus. Some of the topics include limits, definitions of derivative, applications of derivatives, integration and applications of integration. We will be covering Chapters 1 through 5.

·  Deadlines and important dates

Aug 20th - First day of classes

Sep 6th - Last day to add, change sections, change status

Sep 14th - last day to drop ALL classes, withdraw from school for 80% refund
Sep 28th - last day to drop ALL classes, withdraw from school for 60% refund
Oct 26th - last day to withdraw without special permission from the dean

Dec 11th - Final Exam, 1:40PM-4:10PM ENG 105

·  Grading Criteria

A student’s grade will be determined by:

·  weekly homework,

·  two in-class quizzes

·  three in-class tests, and

·  Comprehensive Final Exam.

The respective weights will be:

Homework 150 points

Each Test 150 points

Quizzes 100 points

Final Exam 300 points

Total 150 + 3 x 150 + 2 x 50 + 300 = 1000 points

·  Homework and Testing policies

·  Absolutely no late homework will be accepted. The homework will be assigned weekly from the textbook, and will be due the following Thursday, unless otherwise specified. Only selected problems will be graded (each set will be worth 15 points). The lowest two homework sets will be dropped. Homework will be usually returned during the following Tuesday class period.

·  Absolutely no late tests will be allowed. If you know in advance that you must miss an exam you are required to make arrangements with me several days prior to the exam and take it early in the Disability Services and Testing Center. Students must e-mail or stop by to make an appointment to take those exams (Main Hall room 105).

Grades will be administered according to the following scale (listed below are lower percentage cutoff points):

The FINAL EXAM will be on Tuesday, December 11th at 1:40PM

NOTE: There are no calculators allowed on any of the examinations!!

·  Other Resources

The Math Learning Center, 1st floor ENGR bldg, is available to all math students free of charge and w/o reservation. Check with them for their hours. This is an excellent opportunity to seek alternative explanations of concepts, get expert help with homework, or just meet with your fellow students for a group study session.

There are also rooms available free for reservation in the library—good place for a group to meet. They have chalk/whiteboards but you may want too bring your own chalk and markers.

The hours for the center are: M Tu We Th - 8am-7pm,

F - 8am-4:30pm,
