Today more than ever we realize the influence Canadians have on the world and the tremendous effect the world has on us. Canada has an important place in the history of the world and we are going to explore this issue in Global History 12. The course begins in the year 1945 at the end of World War Two and ends fairly close to the end of the 20th Century. Many of the events and issues we will be studying have shaped our nation today. Terrorism for example, has its routes in the actions of the United States and the Soviet Union after the war ended in 1945. The focus of this course will begin to help in answering the ever-present question, “How did the world arrive at its current state at the beginning if the 21st century?”

Today, more than any other time in human history we live in a global world. How we view the world is not necessarily how others from other view the world. Having stated this, the textbook for the course is Viewpoints – An Inquiry Approach to History since 1945. This course and text will examine conflicting ideologies to help expose the social, political, and economic implications of historical events and hoe they have shaped the world of today, the world you will live in for many years to come.

The course will meet these objectives through the examination of the following units of study:

A.  East-West: The role of the super powers in the post WWII era.

B.  North-South: The origins and consequences of economic disparity

C.  The pursuit of justice and human rights

D.  Societal and technological change

E.  Acknowledging global interdependence

The units will involve the use of case studies which will highlight most of the core concepts associated with each unit theme.
