COURSE DESCRIPTION

Second course on Chinese herbal classics covers Jin Gui Yao Lue (Golden Chamber) by Zhang Zhongjing, syndrome differentiation according to the Four Levels theory recorded in Wai Gan Wen Re Pian (Treatise on Warm Disease) by Ye Tianshi and syndrome differentiation according to the Sanjiao theory recorded in Wen Bing Tiao Bian (Differentiation on Febrile Diseases) by Wu Jutong.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Discuss and analyze the fundamental theories recorded in Jin Gui Yao Lue, Wai Gan Wen Re Pian and Wen Bing Tiao Bian through contextualized case analyses, written assignments, class discussions, and presentations.
  • Differentiate the syndromes documented in the four levels theory recorded in Wai Gan Wen Re Pian and the sanjiao theory recorded in Wen Bing Tiao Bian.
  • Formulate and execute a treatment plan in conformance with the theories in Jing Gui Yao Lue, Wai Gan Wen Re Pian, and Wen Bing Tiao Bian.
  • Apply the classic herbal formulas in the classics for the treatment of common diseases.

TEACHING - LEARNING STRATEGIES

Discussion and presentation will be given to students. Student’s questions and statements are encouraged.

REQUIREMENTS

To study in this class, you must have good knowledge of the foundation of TCM, Chinese Herbology and Chinese Herbal Formulations. Attendance is mandatory. This is a didactic course; a student may miss up to two, three-hour sessions in a 36 hour course without a grade penalty. If a student misses more than what is permissible for a course, regardless of the reason, the final course grade will be lowered one letter. If a student misses more than 25 % of the scheduled classes, the student will be dropped from the course as of that date, and the course grade will be determined as stated in the add/drop policy. If a student misses a quiz, it must be made up with in 7 calendar days and students need to contact the administration office to set up a test make up date and pay make up fee. CLASS PARTICIPATION

Students are required to remain alert during class presentations, listening and participating in the question and answer sessions regarding each question or topic.

Reading Log Form

Throughout the course students will be asked to read select chapters in preparation for the

class. The purpose of this assignment is to expose students to both the breadth and depth of some of the classic literature in the field of Oriental medicine. You are asked to document your reading day by day on the Reading Log Form provided in the syllabus. The completed reading log should be turned in at the 12th week.

Objectives:

Upon the end of class, students will be able to:

1. Learn the history, conception, characteristics, classification of Wen Bing.

2. Understand the pathological factors and pathogenesis.

Hour 1 - Presentation and discussion of the history, conception and characteristics of Wen Bing, the classification of Wen Bing and the pathological factors and pathogenesis of Wen Bing.

Students will learn and understand the diagnostic methods and treatment of Wen Bing, and understand the conception, etiology, pathology, differentiation and treatment of warm diseases.

  2. Explain and list the treatment of Wen Bing

Hour 1 –Presentation and discussion of the common symptoms, tongue and pulse expression and the treatment of Wen Bing,

Assignment 2 (15% of Grade)

Paper writing: Choose an infectious disease or epidemic disease and analyze the disease according to Wen Bing etiology, pathology and differentiation method. Provide proper treatment and formulas based on your TCM diagnosis.
