WORLD PREMIERE:

A CO-CREATION BY SAMY MOUSSA AND MOMENT FACTORY ON STAGE WITH THE OSM

The Orchestra presents a unique creation for the 375th anniversary of Montréal

Montréal, Thursday, April 27, 2017 — The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal and the Society for the Celebration of Montréal’s 375th Anniversary invite the public to an extraordinary orchestral experience when the OSM presents Symphony No. 1 (“Concordia”) by young Canadian composer Samy Moussa, in a one-of-a-kind staging as a co-creation with the multimedia studio Moment Factory. This concert will be presented on three evenings only, May 31 and June 1 and 2 at Maison symphonique, and broadcast both live and deferred on OSM.CA.

“The collaboration involving the OSM, Maestro Nagano, Samy Moussa and Moment Factory should guarantee the success of an inspiring musical work not just as a memorable world premiere during the historical celebrations of 2017 but for a long time to come!”

Alain Gignac, general manager of the Celebration of Montréal’s 375th Anniversary

At this Symphony for Montréal evening, which promises to be unforgettable, the co-creation by Samy Moussa and Moment Factory will be preceded by Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 (“From the New World”).

Madeleine Careau, OSM chief executive officer, was enthusiastic about this concert being part of the official programming for Montréal’s 375th: “We’re happy to represent Montréal on the international scene, with an orchestra that bears the name of our town, and proud to be part of the official celebrations, something that deepens our roots even further in a city that is open to the world.”

A world premiere

The musicians of the OSM will be making the most of their instruments to convey the sounds of SamyMoussa’s very first symphony, to projections by Moment Factory. The audience will be treated to a unique listening and viewing experience.

Driven by the music, the walls of Maison Symphonique will metamorphose and in so doing transport spectators through a dreamlike evocation of Montréal. Melding the past with the future, four living tableaus – Earth, Fire, Water and Air – will set the rhythm for the piece.

Each movement will be introduced by the words of poets who have woven the history of Montréal. Forgotten authors, troubled souls whose vision calls out to us and shakes us up: a moving tribute to the historic vitality of the city.

The Symphony for Montréal performances on May 31 and June 1 and 2 at Maison symphonique are already SOLD OUT, but it will be possible to watch the concert at no charge live and deferred on OSM. CA. Symphony for Montréal will also be broadcast at later dates on Ici ARTV and icimusique.ca.
