360 Search Update

The team talked about whether their system wanted to renew 360 Search which is up for renewal 3/1/14. Most felt the public is not attracted to federated searching.

Motion by Maureen Gormley and second by Eva Poppen to dropping 360 Search.

Voted to drop 360 Search: ACL, DCL, RCL, SPL, SCL, WCL

Voted to renew 360 Search: CCL

Abstained: HCL

Renewals – Ancestry, ALLDATA, NewsBank, ReferenceUSA, Novelest/Select

·  NewsBank – $61,680 to $63,530

·  ReferenceUSA - $128,750 to $125,000

·  NoveList/Select - $43,050/$18,230 = $61,280 to $45,203 / $19,142 - $64,345

Motion by Nicole Herold and second by Ruth Hemingson to renew NewsBank, ReferenceUSA and NoveList/Select databases. Motion carried.

Changes to the GED Test (online only)

Washington will let patrons practice on their computers but felt the patrons would be going to the Centers to take the test. Publishers will be updating the materials but there is a delay because they don’t have all the content figured out yet according to Joe Manion. The current test can be taken until the cutoff date.

Confirm 2014 Crossover Survey Dates

The following dates will be suggested as crossover dates for the MELSA Libraries. February 2 – 8, May 4 – 10, July 13 – 19, and November 2 – 8. Judy Todd will forward the dates to Bruce Pomerantz at State Library Services.

Nicole Herold, Shannon Crary and Joe Manion will review Morningstar and similar databases for the January 2014 meeting.

System Updates

ACL – ACL is waiting to hear about their grant to make bathrooms handicap accessible for the Northtown Library.

CCL – DVDs are now a floating collection. CCL is preparing to go wireless printing at all of the libraries. Currently, CCL is working on a project with Carver County Historical Society to put digitized photos called Past Perfect – available in the CCL libraries.

DCL – Maureen Gormley and Shannon Crary are on the MEIR Task Force for the ELM database purchases. School, academic and public libraries from Minnesota, and North and South Dakota are involved in the process. The RFP process just began and they hope to have the new suite of databases in place by May 2014. Roseanne Byrne, Deputy Director for Dakota County Library is retiring December 31. MNsure sessions with the Employment and Economic Assistance Department are standing room only without any advertising – one at a library a week through March. Every library will have at least two sessions.

HCL – HCL has a lot of ongoing projects – nothing new to report at this time.

RCL – Nothing to add at this time.

SPL – Highland Park and Sun Ray Libraries will close December 2 with a tentative reopen date is November 20, 2014. Hamline Midway Library is temporarily closing December 9 for two weeks to make improvements to their single service desk.

SCL – Vanessa Birdsey is retiring the end of the month. The hiring process will interview 6 candidates and eventually decide between 2 candidates. A new website will be running in December.

WCL – WCL will initiate an e-card in January – a library card that offers digital access only (no borrowing privileges). Washington County patrons only.
