S. cerevisiae has 110 genes that occur in 45 sets of tandemly duplicated genes. While most duplicated genes in yeast arose as a result of the whole genome duplication (Wolfe and Shields 1997), tandem duplication of genes appears to be the second most common category of duplicated genes in yeast, and constitute the majority of duplicated genes in A. gossypii whose genome did not undergo a duplication event.
