Air, water and the sun's energy give us life. But they can also kill and they are most dangerous of all in the form of hurricanes. Wind speeds in hurricanes are much lower than wind speeds in tornadoes. However, hurricanes cause much more damage because they cover a much larger area. The US Forecast Centre can give accurate hurricane warnings. This is because it collects much information in many ways. As a result of warnings, very few people died in Hurricane Andrew. By contrast, the 1970 hurricane in East Pakistan was the world's worst killer. This is mainly because people could not escape. As a result a million people died.

School Net opens the internet to a country's school. In 1999, Canada was the first to complete this project, and now India, South Africa and others have followed. It is hoped that Palestine will do so in the coming years. School Net has several aims. First, it offers valuable extra study materials and, through the internet, an open window on the world. Our lives have been greatly changed by technology, and the speed of change is increasing every day. Computers are much more powerful and much smaller than they were in the 1960s, which were only used by large organizations. Moreover, as they are also much cheaper and more widely available, this has led to the internet revolution and to worldwide communication by e-mail.

Modern computing power is also leading to more development, including housework robots. Unlike early robots, housework robots need powerful artificial intelligence in order to learn simple tasks. Future robots are now in development and experimental prototypes will be built around 2015.
