Course Description/Objective: The focus of this course is to improve your reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary by developing discrete reading skills, expanding both base line and academic vocabulary, and reading in a variety of genres.

Lab work is a required component of this course in addition to homework each week. How much lab work you have to do depends on your score on the Diagnostic given on the secondclass meeting of class. To pass the course, students must earn a C- or above in all course work (which includes tests, quizzes, and lab work). The final exam is a departmental exam.

Classroom Policies:

Attendance:If you are absent, you are responsible for what you miss when you are absent. Once you have missed afourth class meeting, I will notify you via e-mail. If you miss a fifth class, you may be withdrawn from the course.

This class has daily quizzes, so attendance will be taken by a completed quiz or test answer sheet.

Late Arrivals and Early Departures: I expect you to be in class on time and stay until class is dismissed. If you make a habit of coming in late and/or leaving early, I will counsel you. If, after counseling, you continue to arrive late or leave early, I will advise you to withdraw from the class to avoid earning an F in the course. If you don’t withdraw yourself after being notified of excessive tardies or early departures, your grade will be an F.

NOTE: You are 100% responsible for obtaining materials, assignments, information that you miss if you are absent from or late to class.

Course Communication: I will be using Atlas tools to communicate with you outside of class time. These tools are available under the “My Courses” tab in Atlas. The tools include

Atlas e-mail: I will use this to communicate to individual students and to communicate to the class as a whole.

Atlas Announcements: I will use this tool to inform and/or remind students of important information, such as changes in dates/times of assessments, assignments, office hours.

Atlas Course Files: I will use this tool to create a record of all that we do in the course. The syllabus, handouts, homework assignments, etc. will be posted there and will remain there until the end of the term. Therefore, if you are absent, you can go to the course files for this course and find out what you missed and/or what the homework is.

It is your responsibility to know how to access the tools in Atlas “My Courses” and to check your e-mail, class announcements, and course files for information! If you encounter ANY trouble using “My Courses” tools, let me know during or after class!

Classroom Conduct:This is a college classroom, and you and your classmates are here to develop college-level reading proficiency and vocabulary. Therefore, workplace behavior, including dress, is required: behaviors that hinder (block, interrupt) instruction and/or create a negative classroom atmosphere will not be tolerated. If you are doing anything “to impair, interfere with, or obstruct the orderly conduct, processes, and functions of the college,” you may be referred to the Dean of Communications and/or the West Campus Provost. Refer to the “Student Code of Conduct” for more information:

Three-time Rule: In this course, I am going to follow what I call the “three-time rule”: if you do something to interfere with the class, at the first instance, I will tell you to stop that behavior. If you do that again, then I will ask you to leave and not return until you have met with the Dean of Communications (Dr. Elizabeth Renn) or the Dean of Counseling (Dr. Johnson). A third instance of interrupting behavior will lead to your being withdrawn from the course.

Plagiarism: Plagiarism is cheating by copying another person’s work in whole or in part and putting your name on the copied work and/or allowing another student to copy your work. Plagiarism is not tolerated in this class. Here are the consequences for proven plagiarism:

  • The first instance of proven plagiarism will result in your receiving an F for the assessment.
  • The second instance of plagiarism will result in an F in the course.
  • Proven cheating on the final exam/state competency exam (whether it is the first or second instance) will result in an automatic F in the course.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to keep his/her answer sheet covered during objective tests. Failure to keep an answer sheet covered will be considered as aiding cheating. Such behavior will lead to the consequences stated earlier in this note. To discourage cheating, multiple test forms are used for each objective test. Thus, if you copy from another’s answer sheet, you will likely be copying a wrong answer.
