Attendees: Ms. Yonnette Dey, Mr. Aaron Anderson, Lovedip Sandhu, Keran Sangha, Mount Royal parents
Topic / Spokesperson(s) / Discussion- Welcome – overview of new health and physical education curriculum
- School curriculum – health and physical education curriculum
- Curriculum will start Spring 2016
- There will be 2 to 5 lessons a year
- Accomdations can be given once a year
- You can apply for accomdation starting Jan 2016
- There are certain areas where accomdations will not be given due to Human Rights Code
- Grade 1 will learn to identify body parts, senses and how they function, basic good hygiene
- Grade 2 will learn that their body’s will change and basic stages of human development eg. Brushing teeth
- Grade 3 will learn about uniqueness, respect, healthy relationships with peers and family, overcoming unhealthy aspects of relationship and safe environments, how do differences make each individuals unique eg, hair, skin colour, gender identiy, family types
- Grade 4 will learn effects of pubertybefore most students fully experience it helps prepare young people for changes in their bodies, emotions and social relationships; they will learn about physical changes and emotional effects and personal hygiene needs eg. Increase importance of regular bathing
- Grade 5 will learn that puberty will be stressful and keep learning importance of showing respect for all; will learn to indetify reproductive system and how body changes, process of menstruation and sperm production; how to describe emotional and interpersonal stresses related to puberty; strategies to manage stress and enhance their emotional well-being and mental health
- A letter will go home approx. 2 weeks before the lesson is taught so Parents will have opportunity to discuss the curriculum with student’s teacher when the letter goes home
- Grade 6 goal is for children to understand who they are; they may have a sense of self awareness;they will aply to leand about and challenge stereotypes and assumptions; they wil learn factors that affect self-concept or personal indentiy eg. Body image, sterotypes, self awareness, cultural and gender identity; learn about making decisions about personal relationships; how stereotypes around homophobhia, race, gender, sexul orientation can affect how a person feels about themselves
- Grade 7 goal is to make sound decisions; they will learn about importance of having a shared understanding with a partner delaying sexual activity until older; concept of consent and how to communicate consent; how to identify common sexually-transmitted infections; they will learn physical, emotional, social and psychological factors to consider when making sexual health decisions
- Grade 8 goal is to lean respect for thie peers; they will learn about factors that could affect someone’s ability to make safe and healthy decisions about sexual activity

- There is a religious accommodation request form that will go home
- Dance-A-Thon
- In the last meeting, there were parents who participated in organizing the Dance-A-thon and the chair is looking for direction from them
- There is a letter that accompanies the envelope which shoulde go out
- Ms. Dey will get the letters printed and sent out along with the envelopes
- There are 882 children in the school
- There are enough glow sticks left over from last year
- We need to order pop, water, cookies, and pizza
- For the cookies we can go to the office secretary
- Decision: Chair will send another e-mail to last month’s council to seek volunteers to assist in the Dance-A-Thon
