Background

Wigan & Leigh College is a large general Further Education College and will provide an excellent diverse work experience opportunity.

Wigan & Leigh College has had an Environmental Policy since 1997 and within budgetary and staffing constraints has embraced the sustainability agenda from this time.

The successful candidate would be based in the Environmental Services Department managed directly by the Head of Department. They would work closely with the Estates Team in Environmental Services but also across college to reduce energy and water consumption.

Wigan & Leigh College has implemented a number of environmental programmes but the impact has been limited. We require someone to be the catalyst and prime mover to drive forward the College’s environmental and sustainable development agenda, to improve the College’s environmental performance in general but initially specifically focused on energy management and carbon reduction.

Objective

Assistance is required to implement the College Sustainable Development Policy. In particular, this will focus on improving energy, waste and water management strategies, implementing the college travel plan and working to embed Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in all curriculum areas. By involving staff and students, the project aims to result in an increased awareness of and participation in environmental and sustainability issues.

Salary (per annum pro rata): £16,566 Point 12 on new harmonised scale

The placement may be able to be extended dependent upon its success and the development of any further needs that the Environment Team may have. Permanent work opportunities may arise within the team over the duration of the placement but timing and funding will influence the likelihood of any further opportunities for the graduate within the team .

Reduction in energy use: Improving energy management to effect a reduction in carbon footprint and energy costs.

Reduction in quantity of waste going to landfill: Improving waste management through a reduction in waste and assurance of compliance with legislation.

Development and instigation of measures to implement the travel plan, with programmes in place to reduce number of single-occupancy car journeys associated with college business.

The embedding of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in all curriculum areas to increase awareness of sustainable development by staff and students.

Key Task 1

To assist the Head of Environmental Services, through having responsibility for convening a Sustainable Development Champions Network across the college, to support the implementation of the College Sustainable Development Policy.

Key Task 2

To work with the Estates team to develop processes and procedures to monitor College energy and water usage, develop energy saving initiatives and meet targets for year on year reduction in consumption.

Key Task 3

To work with the College Services Manager (Facilities manager) to ensure compliance with the hazardous waste regulations to develop a waste management strategy and reduce the amount of College waste to landfill.

Key Task 4

To assist the Head of Environmental Services in the implementation of the College Travel Plan.

Key Task 5

To work with the Education for Sustainable Development Group to embed Sustainable Development in the curriculum.

Key Task 6

To maintain and develop knowledge of environmental and sustainable development legislation and directives, developing and implementing an Environmental Management System to ensure compliance with the AOC ‘Green College’ declaration.

Key Task 7

To be a representative for the Department for Environmental Services at College management groups, as required and to represent the College at external events and in liaison with external organisations.

Key Task 8

To control allocated budgets and ensure expenditure remains within budget.

Key Task 9

To undertake appropriate staff development as agreed with the line manager to keep abreast of developments in the principal area of work, and to follow strictly the requirements of the College's Health, Safety & Environment Policy and Equality/Diversity Policy.

Key Task 10

To work co-operatively with other areas of the College to provide a corporate College service, particularly at enrolment times and during academic vacations.
