POSITION TITLE:Substance Abuse Monitor Specialist (SAMS)

Hourly Salary:$12.00 (compensatory with experience and education)

Calendar Days:178 Days (Temporary position: May not be renewed for next school year)

Reports to:Chief of Police or designee

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Substance Abuse Monitor Specialist is responsible for identifying and monitoring students at risk of drug use, abuse, or other self-destructive behaviors that threaten their academic success.

The mission of the Substance Abuse Monitor Specialist is to help students perform at their maximum potential, help school administrators monitor, intervene and prevent drug use, abuse, and other significant at-risk behaviors in schools.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:Some College Preferred/High School Diploma or GED Required

Experience:Specialized training or work experience in behavioral sciences, alcohol or drug counseling/rehabilitation, or school based programs and/or law enforcement experience

Special Certifications:TCLEOSE License/Eligibility for TCLOSE Commission preferred

Texas Driver’s License

Skills:Computer literate, familiar with Microsoft Windows Applications, Spreadsheets, Word Processing Applications and general knowledge of computer use

Must possess good people skills, articulate, able to communicate effectively, observant of details, take good notes, write and prepare comprehensive report

Other Requirements:Position is physically demanding and requires applicant to be able to stand for prolonged periods of time, walk, run, see, hear, lift reasonable weigh, operate a motor vehicle, work varying hours, and read, write, and speak the English language (Bilingual applicants welcome)

DUTIES:

Work with police and school administration to prevent, intervene and reduce the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco products on school property

Identify and monitor students who use or possess drugs, alcohol, or tobacco.

Monitor attendance and behavior of students identified as having used or possessed drugs or alcohol.

Contact or meet with parents of students identified as having used or possessed drugs or alcohol

Formulate strategies with police and school administrators to promote drug free lifestyles and activities on campus

Work with faculty and staff to identify persons on campus who may be users or abusers of drugs or alcohol and other substances

Provide daily reports and periodical activity summaries

Provide in-services on drug recognition and awareness for faculty and staff members

Provide community presentation on drug use awareness for parents and public
