Job Title: Staff Accountant

Department:Accounting

Reports To: CFO

Location:Mesa, AZ Office

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary

This position will be a Staff Accountant rolewith the largest independent insurance agency in Arizona and will be performing duties which include Accounts Receivable management, preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations, performing month-end accounting functions, using pivot tables to extract financial and operational data to prepare various financial reports, and assisting the CFO and Controller in various projects as needed. The candidate will also have the ability to take on expanded responsibilities to meet the forecasted growth of the company. Accounting degree preferred and strong knowledge of excel required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include some or all of the following. Additional duties may be assigned.

  1. Accounts Receivable – prepare monthly A/R Aging Reports, monitor past due accounts and write-offs, drive improvement in timely collection of receivables
  2. Perform monthly balance sheet account reconciliations and roll forward of key accounts(including fixed assets, notes payable, and notes receivable)
  3. Prepare monthly accounting reports for specialty nationwide insurance programs
  4. Fixed Asset accounting (input of additions, disposals, and generating applicable depreciation reports)
  5. Assist in the trend analysis of trial balance accounts and preparing supporting information for Analytical Reports
  6. Prepare monthly journal entries and assist in month-end close of financial statements.
  7. Regularlyprepare and update accounting reports that properly track and disclose items such as operating lease contracts, acquisitions, and other financial transactions
  8. Assist in projects directed by CFO and Controller.
  9. Resolve discrepancies in accounting records.
  10. Keep accurate records with organized filing of supporting documents
  11. Various office duties as assigned or directed.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

Insurance industry and Accountingexperience preferred. Accounting degree a plus.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as policy forms, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with internal and/or external customers.

Mathematical Skills

Intermediate Skills. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, etc.

Reasoning Ability

High Skills. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

Strong knowledge and experience using Microsoft Excel and other Office Products. Ability to write macros, create pivot tables, and experience using Access a plus.

Other Skills and Abilities

Experience in Applied Agency Management System (TAM) or other similar system for accounting file maintenance a plus.
