Introduction:

Welcome to 10th grade U.S. History. The course consists of informal class lectures in an open forum setting. Student discussion and active participation are both necessary for success. Furthermore, the class will take a hands-on approach to learning, where students stay involved in the learning process. I believe this approach is best to reach out to multiple student learning styles. At various times throughout the year, instructional strategies will include multimedia presentations, debate, group work, class projects, research and formal writing responses. After reading the following expectations and responsibilities, your signature indicates agreement to these requirements. Your parent or guardian must sign also, indicating his or her understanding and support of the requirements of this course.

Classroom Policies

·  Academic Honesty: Cheating is NOT tolerated and will result in a grade of zero. Working together should not be confused with copying work from one another.Use group work to help each other and learn from you peers. Plagiarism on any writing assignment is also considered cheating. Using anyone else’s words as your own, or paying someone else to do your work is unacceptable. This policy includes improper use of the Internet.

·  Grading Scale:

Categories / Points
·  Tests / 100
·  Projects, Quizzes / 50
·  Homework/Classwork / 25
·  Participation / 10

*Students will be given a grade sheet each semester. With this sheet the student will record the date, assignment, points earned, and points possible. This grade sheet will help students keep up with their current grade as the school year goes along. A student’s final grade will be determined by dividing points made into points possible.

·  Make-up Work: Do not confuse late work with make-up work. All students have 2 days to turn in assignments in the event of an excused absence. In the event that a student misses a test or quiz, they should set up a make-up time within the 2 day window. Due to coaching responsibilities, no make-ups will be given after school. Attendance is essential for success. Missing class can create problems if it is done often.

·  Conferences: If you are having difficulty understanding the material, please make an appointment to see me either before or after school. Do not wait until the day of the test or the last week of school to show your effort. Parent-teacher conferences can made upon appointment.

Disciplinary Procedure

Students are responsible for ALL rules in the student code of conduct. I expect all students to be respectful and to behave appropriately at ALL times. When a student misbehaves, he or she is taking important class time away from fellow students. Misbehavior will not be tolerated, and the following consequences will result for any student who does not obey school and classroom rules:

·  1st Warning: Student-Teacher Conference

·  2nd Offense: Parent Notification

·  3rd Offense: Referral to the Office

*Depending on the severity of the incident, students may be sent directly to the office.

Have a good year. Work hard and you will be successful. If you need help, ask.
