Matters Arising / SRC awaiting agreement from Stephen Savage to carry over funds from last year.
JM and AMl arranged for the Mayor of Garstang to meet the Lord Mayor of Newcastle on his way through Newcastle as part of his charity cycle ride. The Mayor and his wife were thrilled. SRC thanked them both very much for organising thisespecially at such short notice.
Workplan for 2010 - 2011 / No changes to report.
Newcastle & Gateshead EAT Festival - Update / SRC will be attending the launch on Friday 11th June at Saltwell Park Towers 7 -11pm. NH & KH volunteered to come if there was space. SRC to contact them.
Participants are now confirmed for Saturday and Sunday 12/13 June. Activities will include tombola, raffle, guess the weight of the cake, guess the number of coffee beans in a jar, treasure hunt, penalty shoot out, coconut shy, Fairtrade chocolate beer from Geltsdale Brewery in Brampton. SRC will email details to arrange time slots for all volunteers. JM, AM, KH, NH, CF, LL, LG have all confirmed their attendance. Money raised through the tombola will be donated to St Joseph’s Asylum Seeker Drop In. The tombola license is held by Audrey Marshall. Money raised through the raffle will be donated to Traidcraft Exchange.
The Co-operative have donated vouchers for a Fairtrade hamper raffle prize. NH reminded us that we could apply to the Co-operative Community Fund for future events.
SRC asked if people could keep an eye out for Fairtrade coconuts. / SRC

History Leaflet Update / Image of the front cover was circulated for comments.
- It was suggested that ‘Newcastle’ should be included in the title.
- Richard Adams photograph could maybe be bigger depending on the quality of the print.
- The Partnership logo needs to be displayed.

Mini Mela – Grainger Street 29-31 July / SRC to speak to Jane and Doreen for more info. Possibly looking to attend for 1 day. Good promotion for Fairtrade beer and Hadrian’s Wall Tea. / SRC
Jarrow Crusade 75 Anniversary October 2011 / Bruce Crowther is very keen to incorporate Fairtrade into this celebration, however he is awaiting go ahead from the Jarrow Committee.
Agreed that this was a very good event to support for next year. SRC to feedback to Bruce. / SRC
PHD Update / LG has been continuing to write up interviews and is working with St Mary’s School but is struggling to book time slots with teachers for interviews.
Laura has also been researching into trade unions. SRC & CF are attending the TUC conference at Gateshead Hilton on Saturday 22nd May to promote Fairtrade. LG agreed to attend also. SRC to send her details. / SRC
AOB/good ideas / The Chair reminded all to check for Fairtrade status if they are a member of a church or faith group.
NewcastleUniversitynow hasa validated Fairtrade Module which can be offered to students studying agriculture, geography and business.
KH requested that we send Media, Pennsylvania a Fairtrade pack. This was the first US Fairtrade Town which she recently visited and was very impressed by.
SRC circulated the NE Fairtrade Purchasing Guide that had arrived that morning. 1000 copies are available for distribution throughout the region. SRC ordered 2000 more at a cost of £300, as was advised at the last minute by the South West Fairtrade group that 1000 didn’t last very long. SRC to send electronic copies to Chamber of Commerce and Newcastle Business Forum for distribution to businesses throughout the North East.
SRC circulated a copy of a directory from the South West which incorporates local produce with Fairtrade, entitled “Fair and Local”. SRC suggested we discuss the idea of producing something similar. There was much discussion and differing opinions as to what would be the best for the promotion of Fairtrade. AM requested this should be put on the next agenda for further discussion.
SRC announced that this was Charley’s last meeting. The Chair expressed thanks to Charley for all her help and hard work during her time with us. / SRC/KH
