Note: This census record is still being verified as Owen’s father (Owen, age 15), grandfather (Owen, age 48) and great-grandfather (Edward, age 73). The genealogist estimates that County Armagh is where Owen’s family originated and our Owen moved to County Cavan, married Catherine “Kitty” McCabe and they had five boys – Michael, Patt [probably Patrick], Thomas, Alexander and Owen. Census records indicate they had a daughter, Rose (see below). Pat and Owen immigrated to the United States (Pat emigrated approx. 3 years before Owen). Pat traveled around for awhile, as far as St. Louis; however, he reunited with Owen (Owen placed an ad in a Boston paper specializing in reuniting Irish Immigrants which probably got them back together in Providence)where they both settled. There is no record that Patrick married and had children. Michael was a baker in Cootehill. He never married; however, the site of his bakery (now deserted and for sale) still exists in downtown Cootehill in County Cavan. Cootehill is the closest town surrounded by farms, one of which was Owen’s farm – still called “Rice Fields” by the residents. Thomas farmed the Rice properties until his death in 1919 (never married). I’m pretty sure they had a sister, Rose, because she is listed on the 1900 census and 1910 census living with Thomas as his “seamstress” sister. I found no record of Alexander - he could have emigrated as well. What’s cool is how many names we can now connect Owen’s siblings with the names Owen and Ellen gave their children!

At present, County Armagh is in Northern Ireland, and County Cavan is in the Republic of Ireland.

Note: I couldn’t find a death record for Owen, but there is a probate record that lists Owen dying in 1869, with Catherine (Kitty) inheriting the estate. The genealogist found probate records that the property passed from Owen to Catherine to Thomas to Eugene Monaghan. Most likely, Thomas inherited the property since he was next eldest son and Thomas inherited even though Michael was the oldest, since Michael, who worked in the bakery, did not live on nor farm the property. Thomas died in 1919, Michael died in 1909, Patrick and Owen emigrated and Alexander either died, moved somewhere else in Ireland, or emigrated. I could not find birth or death records for Rose.

Notes:

Note: For some reason, this birth record does not coincide with the birth year Owen listed when he lived in Providence. We know this is our Providence Owen because he obtained a passport in 1920 to settle his father’s estate and all of the information from the passport matches the probate records in Ireland. Owen traveled back to Ireland as heir to his brother Thomas’ estate (Rice Fields) and as heir to his brother Michael’s estate. I wonder whether he split the proceeds with Patrick when he returned to Providence. Thomas died in 1919 and Michael died in 1909. Owen sold Rice Fields to a man named Eugene Monaghan in 1920. The property is still owned by Eugene’s two sons (both now in their 80’s). By the way, one of the residents stopped us when we were roaming Rice Fields to say that he spoke with one of the Monaghan brothers, who said we could buy the property if we were interested. So, so tempting – but majorly impractical.
