• funding for the costof the materials.

It is important for nest boxes to be installed in appropriate locations, and monitored according to VBS protocols during the nesting season. Therefore, in most cases, it is preferable for the boxes to be donated to VBS, and we will make sure they are placed on public lands where we have or can get monitors. The scout does not need to install the boxes. It may be possible, however, for a grant to be awarded to a scout who is working with a VBS member to install boxes in a certain location where the VBS member will arrange for the monitoring.

In most cases, the "boxes" will include the complete unit consisting of the nest box with a Noel (cat/raccoon) guard on the front, and attached to a pole with a snake guard, all according to the plans on the VBS web site.In some cases, we may have a need for just boxes or predator guards; please inquire if you are interested in building partial units for your project.

There is no minimum or maximum number of boxes, so the project can be sized for any scout or youth project. Any time of year is fine, but grants are issued on a first-come basis. Grant work should be completed in a timely fashion. Applicants often organize and lead a work day and invite others to help put together the boxes.

Applicants begin by submitting an application form to Carmen Bishop at . The applicant will build a sample nest box unit to be approved by VBS before the applicant proceeds with the rest of the boxes. Applicants must submit receipts to document the cost of the project, with the grant paid on a reimbursement basis. Please inquire if other arrangements are needed.
