Student Government Program Assistant Job Description

Definition and Purpose

Under the supervision of the ASI Student Government Coordinator, the Student Government Program Assistant performs duties associated with projects beneficial to the efficient operation of Student Government, including communicating with, recruiting and encouraging involvement of the students of SonomaStateUniversity.

Educational and Qualifying Experience

  • Must be a currently enrolled student at SonomaStateUniversity. All ASI staff must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0.
  • Experience in some aspect of program or event planning.
  • Must have proficiency in public speaking and be able to interact with a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to think and act creatively.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and excellent written communication skills.
  • Set priorities and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.
  • Possess a positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
  • Must be courteous and pleasant at all times.
  • Ability to work effectively with and for student leaders and professional staff.
  • Knowledge of general information regarding the campus and the Associated Students is helpful.

Computer Skills

Must have general computer skills in a Windows environment with proficiency in Microsoft Word. Familiarity with social networking sites highly preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent customer service to all students, ASI officers, faculty, administrators, and staff.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of a general marketing campaign to increase the student body’s engagement with ASI and its programs and services.
  • Assist in training and consultation with student organization leaders in regard to ASI funding processes, programming, and other functions.
  • Assist with the design and implementation ASI marketing campaigns for major initiatives, projects, and events, including (but not limited to) Big Nite, Student Government Day, student government elections, and civic participation (including state and national elections).
  • Actively collaborate with other members of the ASI outreach staff, Executive Management team, other student leaders and staff.
  • Represent ASI and encourage involvement through tabling, events, and classroom/student organization visits.
  • Assist with ongoing assessment projects.
  • Perform special projects and other duties assigned by the ASI Student Government Coordinator or other professional staff.

Period of Employment

Employment with this organization is of an "at will" nature, which means that the employee may resign at any time with two weeks notice or the Associated Students may immediately discharge the employee at any time with or without cause.

Compensation and Hours

  • Summer hours possibly available.
  • Must be available to work 15 hours per week during normal operating hours of Associated Students, Inc. The employee may be asked to work an additional 5 hours per week during times of peak activity for the corporation. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends is required. The Program Assistant’s schedule is somewhat flexible and will be determined based on the successful candidate’s schedule and that of relevant ASI professional staff and student leaders.
  • The position is classified as a Student Assistant III. Minimum range starting at $9.75 per hour - Maximum of 20 hours per week. No benefits.
  • Pay (step) increases are designed to recognize and reward satisfactory work performance. Satisfactory work performance will be based on performance evaluations. Performance evaluations are conducted once a semester (twice yearly) after 300 hours of work. Increases are based on the budget and are at the discretion of the supervisor and the ASI Executive Director.
  • Training – may include an overnight retreat in August and in January before school starts.
  • Report to the ASI Student Government Coordinator.
