Individual Placement Description

Placement / F2 Clinical Geratology (Geriatric Medicine and Rehabilitation)
The department / The department of Clinical Geratology is based at the John Radcliffe Hospital and specialises in the medical care and rehabilitation of elderly patients. There are currently two medical rehabilitation wards (Adams and Bedford) and an Acute Stroke Unit plus Day hospital.
The department provides medical staff for medical rehabilitation wards in two local Community Hospitals, in Witney and in Abingdon, where specialist work encompasses stroke rehabilitation and orthogeriatrics.
The majority of patients are transferred from the acute medical wards of the John Radcliffe Hospital after initial diagnosis and treatment. A few patients are admitted acutely direct to the rehabilitation wards, some from the Lionel Cosin Day Hospital and some following GP calls. The department enjoys close working relationships with the Oxfordshire County Council Department of Social Services, and work on the wards is multidisciplinary, with regular (at least weekly) meetings between nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and others.

The type of work to expect and learning opportunities / Duties appropriate to the grade of the post and under the direction of the responsible consultants, principally consisting of clinical care of patients who are being investigated and treated in the geratology and rehabilitation wards, in outpatient clinics, and in the Day hospital and Emergency Medical Unit (EMU).
Teaching clinical medical students and assisting with postgraduate teaching.
There are teaching sessions within the department for junior doctors in Geratology.
You will be expected to attend the monthly FY2 teaching in Oxford (except when cover in the Community Hospitals is required).

Clinical Supervisor(s) for the placement / Allocation at time of placement
Main duties of the placement / Day to day care of the patients on the wards, including transfers from other hospitals and occasional emergency admissions. Attending ward rounds, and on occasion attending patients in outpatient clinics and in the Day hospital and EMU.
Maintaining patient records, writing summaries and letters, and contributing to departmental audit procedures.
Research:
Some research projects are woven into the clinical work of the department, and the post holder will be expected to contribute to these. The F2 will be expected to participate in audit and should complete a project in the 4 month placement.

During “ward work” you will be expected to be involved with seeing relatives, working with physio and OT (including attending home visits). Opportunities also exist for gaining experience in Parkinson’s Disease, falls and psychogeriatrics. Doctors are encouraged to utilize links to other specialties where appropriate e.g. trauma, cardiology etc
