The Zarrow Mental Health Symposium is an annual educational forum designed to provide state-of-the-art research and practice information about current issues related to the mental health of our community.
Purpose:
The purpose of the 2005 Zarrow Mental Health Symposium is to explore mental health treatment options that relate to the mind, body and spirit. The Symposium will focus on current clinical research, best practices, and model programs that address the importance and various aspects of treating the whole person: psychological, physiological, spiritual, emotional, and social, and with concern for the particular needs of persons of varying spiritual and cultural backgrounds.
Objectives:
Participants in the Symposium may pursue one or more of the following objectives:
¨ Describe recent clinical research, best practices, and model programs related to clinical care and treatment of serious mental illnesses.
¨ Discuss ways in which emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly impact health and treatment plans.
¨ Identify potential intervention strategies, community and clinical resources that can be used to assist in the management of mental illness.
¨ Cite positive effects of mind-body interventions on psychological functioning and quality of life.
¨ Discuss ethical considerations related to the treatment of mental health consumers.
¨ List particular concerns of varying spiritual and cultural backgrounds with special emphasis on African-American women.
The conference will feature five plenary sessions, including presentations by nationally known speakers on topics that encompass the latest research and clinical practices. Additionally, participants may choose three from among 18 concurrent breakout sessions focused on clinical and community services and ethical professional practice.
Continuing Education Credit:
The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (DMHSAS), Institute for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Education and Training, is accredited by the Oklahoma State Medical Association (OSMA) Council on Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. The DMHSAS Institute for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Education and Training has approved 12.75 credit hours in Category I of the Physician’s Recognition Award of the American Medical Association for this medical education activity. The Institute has approved 12.75 credit hours for social workers, certified alcohol and drug counselors, certified prevention specialists, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, licensed marital and family therapists, law enforcement personnel, and licensed behavioral practitioners attending this seminar. Please indicate on the registration form the type of CEU credit required.
Plenary Session Faculty:
Edward P. Shafranske, Ph.D., ABPP
Dr. Shafranske is Professor and director of the doctoral program in clinical psychology at Pepperdine University. He has twice served as President of APA Division 36: Psychology of Religion. He contributes scholarship in the psychology of religion and in psychoanalysis and served as editor of Religion and the Clinical Practice of Psychology (APA, 1996), co-editor of Spiritually-Oriented Psychotherapy (APA) and co-author of Clinical Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (APA). Dr. Shafranske is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, a member of the American and International Psychoanalytic Associations and recipient of the William Bier Award and Distinguished Service Award of APA Division 36, the Franz Alexander Award, the CPA Education and Training Award, and the Pastoral Counseling Award. He has lectured widely through North America as well as in Norway, Italy and Russia. In addition to academic and research activities, Dr. Shafranske maintains a private practice in clinical psychology and psychoanalysis in Irvine, California.
Ann Dapice, Ph.D.
Dr. Dapice (Lenape-Cherokee) is Director, Research and Education of T. K. Wolf, Inc.Shehas a doctorate in psychology, sociology and philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, PA. She has served as professor and administrator at a number of universities including the University of Pennsylvania, Widener University, Penn State University and Goddard College. Her cross-cultural research has been reported in professional journals, books, and academic presentations regionally, nationally and internationally. Dr. Dapice is a member of the Elders Council of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Oklahoma, Tulsa Chapter, and of the Board of Directors of Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry and Mental Health Association in Tulsa. She is presently a consultant to the University of Pennsylvania for American Indian program development.
Clark Inkanish, BS, ICADC
Mr. Inkanish (Wichita-Caddo-Cheyenne) is Executive Director of T. K. Wolf, Inc. He has more than 30 years of alcohol and drug assessment, counseling and intervention experience. He uses a number of counseling modalities and teaches Native American culture and spirituality in a variety of settings including university classes. He has presented workshops and conferences on the topics of addiction and Indian culture both regionally and nationally. He is a member of the Committee on Religious Understanding, Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry; Chapter Chaplain and member of the Elders Council of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Oklahoma, Tulsa Chapter; and board member of the Palmer Drug Institute.
Marilyn Martin, M.D., MPH
Dr. Martin served as Medical Director and Vice President of Medical Services for Maryland Health Partners (MHP). Her specialty training in psychiatry was obtained at the University of Maryland, in addition to completing a Masters in Public Health at Johns Hopkins with an emphasis on Health Policy and Management. Dr. Martin’s clinical experience includes work in a state hospital, community mental health centers, private practice, and a mobile treatment team. She has served as medical director for a core service agency, as well as psychiatric consultant to a large metropolitan church. Dr. Martin has given numerous educational presentations around mental health in the African-American community, depression, and the interplay of spirituality and mental health. She is the author of Saving Our Last Nerve: The Black Woman’s Path to Mental Health, and co-author with Dr. Rodrigo Munoz of a version written for Hispanic women.
Nicholas R.S. Hall, Ph.D.
Dr. Hall is the Director of the Institute for Health and Human Performance and the Director of the Wellness Center at the Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Florida. He received his BA in Psychology from the University of Florida and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Hall is an internationally recognized Psychoneuroimmunologist who has conducted pioneering research delving into the interrelationships between the emotions and health. Since 1972, his National Institute of Health supported research on the mind and body has been featured on numerous television programs including CBS “60 Minutes”, the BBC “Nova” series, and the Emmy Award winning series “Healing and the Mind” produced by Bill Moyers for PBS. He has published over 150 research articles and book chapters, and was senior editor of the highly acclaimed book, Mind Body Interactions and Disease which was commissioned by the National Institutes of Health.

The Mental Health Association in Tulsa is pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships to the symposium for participants with financial need, with primary consideration given to mental health consumers and their family members. Refund Policy:
