MQMarineModelling Workshop
The MQ Marine Research Centre (MQMarine) offers an exciting workshop on
Numerical modelling for coastal and marine science. This is a 1-day workshop run by Dr Tom Mortlock (Environmental Sciences, MQ) and Simon Brandi Mortensen (DHI Water and Environment). An overview of the MIKE by DHI environmental modelling software and case examples focusing on coastal and marine systems will be presented (without overly technical detail). An introduction to numerical modelling for coastal and marine science (07 November 2016, SIMS)
Modelling is a crucial tool to improve predictions about future biological, chemical and physical processes influenced by changing environmental conditions. Observational studies are a key component of such models, but how do we feed these into a model, how do we change parameters in a model, which model is the best to use, or how do we establish our own model? This workshop focuses on bringing together marine researchers who are keen to understand more about modelling for coastal and shelf oceanography.
This 1-day workshop will be split into an introductory morning and a hands-on afternoon session. Simon Brandi Mortensen, Head of Department, Coastal & Marine from the Danish Hydraulics Lab (DHI), will present the MIKE by DHI modelling suite. MIKE can be applied to research problems ranging from water quality modelling, to shelf physical oceanography, to coastal processes and engineering, to marine mammal tracking, thus is of broad interest to many marine scientists. We will present case examples, and all talks will be deliberately non-technical, covering aspects around the basic theme of 'what MIKE can do for your research'.
As a result of the workshop we expect participants to have:
1.An understanding of the basics of using process-based models for shelf oceanography;
2.An appreciation of how modelling can be applied to your own research aims;
3.A basic understanding of MIKE.
Parking and Transport:
SIMS is located at the end of Chowder Bay Road, Mosman. There are very limited free parking spots. Paid parking is available nearby, and if you have a National Parks sticker, this can be used here. There are free parking spots available at Gunners Barracks (from Middle Head Road, turn into Suakin Drive, turn right before the gates, and then the carpark is to your left). From the Gunners Barracks carpark follow the signs that lead you via a short bushwalk directly down to SIMS.
