ABOUT US
A group of parents whose children had special needs and learning differences came together and decided to form a group to support each other through education, advocacy and social networking. They felt families need not feel alone in their quest for the best academic environment for their child, whether placement is in or out-of-district.
SPARC is based on these two principles:
1) Parents are a child's best advocate.
2) Parents have a right and responsibility tooversee their child's education.
WHO ATTENDS OUR PROGRAMS?
All parents and family members, teachers and other school professionals, paraprofessionals, and any interested individuals seeking to learn more about special needs and/or learning difficulties are welcome to attend.
MISSION STATEMENT
•Work in partnership with the District to advance opportunities for children with special educational needs.
•Provide a forum for families and educators to share information and resources.
•Act as a liaison between schools, families and the community to increase awareness of learning differences and special needs.
•Share best practices among schools and families by reaching out to all, withspeakers, literature, and social meetings.
WHAT DO WE OFFER?
SPARC is a parent-run group that provides a forum for parents to discuss important challenges facing our children in our schools and community. Our goal is to collaborate with administration, teachers and other school professionals to provide input on programs and to promote an atmosphere of open communication, respect, and understanding among parents, students, educators, and the Medford community.
A diverse variety of topics are introduced throughout the school-yearwhich aredesigned to inform and stimulate the interests of all who attend. Some meetings may include structured programs featuring guest speakers, demonstrations and workshops, while others may be informal yet informational support meetings and fun social events. All parents and educators are encouraged to contribute ideas, suggestions, and questions.
WHO SHOULD CONTACT SPARC?
•Parents who suspect their child may have special learning needs.
• Parents who have questions about their child’s needs, from the mildly impaired to the most significantly challenged.
• Parents who want up-to-date information onSpecial Education programming, IEPs, andSection 504 Plans.
• Parents of children with health, social, and emotional challengesthat affect theirchild’s education.
• Parents who want to network with other
special needs parents.
We know that parenting a child with special needs and learning differences can be a lonely journey. Oftentimes, families feel isolated and frustrated. SPARCis here to make every effort to connect families with resources and education so that they may gain the knowledge and confidence needed to ensure their child’s highest level of achievement.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
SPARC welcomes volunteers! You can volunteer regularly, part-time, or even one-time, donating whatever time and talents you can contribute. If you have a passion for helping others, consider joining SPARC and becoming a committee member.
SPARC can only be successful when parents come out to meetings/activities and take an active role. Your input and participation is invaluable. We welcome any suggestions and resources that you can offer to help us serve you better.
