Language Arts 11

Course Description/Overview

Language Arts 11 builds upon the 10th grade literature experience. This course moves students from an American outlook on the 20thCentury to a global perspective. Through this global exposure to modern world literature, students explore the human condition inlight of the cultural implications found in novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and memoirs from throughout the world, including theMiddle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America. In addition to the study of literature, students will develop writing portfolios which willprovide them opportunities to employ the writing process as well as a variety of writing modes, including narrative, informational, andpersuasive. Grammar, usage, mechanics, and vocabulary development will be stressed. Assessment methods vary and include oral,written, multi-media and group presentations. Various forms of technology are infused throughout the course.

Course Procedures

Students will regularly read, write, and engage in discussions as part of daily lessons. They will be given detailed descriptions, grading rubrics, and deadlines for all assignments. Students will participate in a writing workshop in which they will create and maintain a writing portfolio to demonstrate their growth as writers. SAT vocabulary quizzes will be given weekly. Students are expected to keep class notes and handouts organized in a binder or folder.
