14. General Summary of Function/Purpose of Position
This is an entry level student assistant position which will perform beginning or trainee level work under professional personnel. Work will be performed under well-defined guidelines and assignments will be closely reviewed throughout the entire scope of any project. This position will assist with MDOT’s Wetland Mitigation and Monitoring Programs. Work shall include, but is not limited to, the following: locating suitable wetland mitigation sites, installing monitoring wells and staff gauges at wetland sites, providing routine maintenance of wetland mitigation sites, assisting wetland monitoring staff with site set-up and monitoring of vegetation, hydrology and soils.

Duty 1

General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 50
This position will assist the MDOT Wetland Mitigation Specialist with various functions needed for the successful delivery of MDOT’s Wetland Mitigation Program.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Perform in-house reviews to located suitable sites for wetland mitigation using a Geographic Information System (GIS). This includes comparing and overlaying topography maps with soil survey maps and historical wetland maps to locate suitable areas for mitigation. This also includes searching property listings and establishing initial property owner contacts.
·  Assist wetland mitigation specialist in documentation required for mitigation sites. This involves assisting in creating conservation easements, compiling and recording permits associated with the mitigation site, and inputting data into the mitigation database.
·  Provide assistance and technical support for wetland design, construction, and maintenance activities. This shall include, but is not limited to, planting within the wetlands, removal of tree shelters, and installing and/or recording of monitoring wells.
·  Perform other duties as requested.

Duty 2

General Summary of Duty 2 % of Time 50
This position will assist the MDOT wetland monitoring specialist with various functions needed for the successful delivery of MDOT’s Wetland Monitoring Program.
Individual tasks related to the duty.
·  Assist wetland monitoring staff with site set-up, including installation of vegetation sampling transects, monitoring wells, staff gauges and sampling quadrats.
·  Provide routine site maintenance, including downloading monitoring wells and changing batteries, maintaining sampling transects, and removing invasive species.
·  Assist with data collection during routine monitoring visits. This shall include identifying plants to the species level, digging soil pits and profiling soils, and downloading monitoring well information.
·  Assist with inputting data collected in the field into MDOT’s wetland monitoring database.
·  Perform other duties as requested.

This position requires limited judgment and/or independent decision-making in the performance of duties. All work is conducted for and reviewed by a supervisor and/or other environmental section employees relevant to duties.

The supervisor’s guidance is asked for regarding decisions which may affect department policy, when conflicting priorities arise, or when situations arise that require upper management approval prior to implementation.

The section provides environmental clearance for all the department’s projects. This position will assist staff members with various functions required for the successful delivery of MDOT’s Wetland Mitigation and Monitoring Programs.
26. What are the minimum education and experience qualifications needed to perform the essential functions of this position?
EDUCATION:
Current enrollment in a vocational or technical school, or post-secondary educational institution.
Preferred program of study: Natural Resources including wetlands, streams, lakes, plants, etc., biology, environmental.
EXPERIENCE:
Prefer experience working in natural resources including wetlands and experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
A basic ability to write, organize, and communicate. Ability to work well with others, including effective communication both written and orally. Ability to work full or part-time on a year-round basis. Basic understanding of wetland soils, hydrology and vegetation is preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
