Lunch in Middle School

Most sixth graders eat lunch in the school cafeteria every day of the school week. All students need to walk to the lunchroom and sit in their assigned seats. Teachers look at tables to see if students are sitting quietly. The students sitting quietly at their tables are usually the first told to go get their hot lunches. Students need to sit and wait patiently until their table is told to line up for hot lunch.

If I bring a sack lunch I can start eating as soon as I sit down at my table. I will need to use an indoor voice when talking to other students at my table. I will need to talk nicely with peers at my table.

There are many things that I need to know about buying a hot lunch. I will need to know that there will be five choices of meals each day. I will choose one kind of a meal.

1. I could choose the Meal of the Day which is a main dish, two sides, bread and milk. The sides are choices of fruits or vegetables. The Meal of the Day will be written on a board outside where I pick up my food, or I can read about in the Argus Leader newspaper or on the Sioux Falls School District website: http://www.sf.k12.sd.us/.

2. I could choose the Italian Bar which is usually a slice of pizza or a pizza pocket. Any bar selection comes with two sides and milk.

3. I could choose the Mexican Bar which is usually nachos or tacos. Again I can choose two sides and milk.

4. I could choose to build a Baked Potato for my meal.

5. I also have a choice of a Chef Salad.

Special treats like cookies, bars, or ice cream cost extra. I will need to talk with Mom or Dad about spending extra money on treats. Also, I should think about too many treats not being healthy for my body.

After I select my meal I will need to walk to the cash register. I will need to use the key pad to enter my 6 digit ID number. My ID number is ______. Entering this number is how I pay for the lunch that I have selected. If I need help, an adult can help me.

When I am finished eating my lunch, I will need to clean up my area and throw away my trash. If I ate a hot meal I will need to clean off my tray in the trash can and then put my tray on the cafeteria counter. If it is my turn to wash the table, I will need to get a rag and wipe off the entire top of my table.

When my 30 minute lunch period is over, I will need to have my mouth closed. I raise my hand to show the teachers in the lunchroom that I am ready to be dismissed. I will need to sit quietly until the teachers tell my table it is ok to go.

After I am dismissed from the lunchroom I will walk to my locker and get ready for my next class.
