A / I.B Time line 1948 to present day putting in a few key dates that the children will know about. Explain what is meant by a decade and identify the 1950s on the timeline.
Watch DVD : Britain Since 1948 ( BBC series recorded from TV any other video material could be substituted )
Ask pupils to tell you how we know about the past. List their ideas on the board
Show photos of Elizabeth then and now. Identify who she is and explain we will be looking in more detail at the Coronation
Show a photograph of part of the procession and tell the children that there were millions of people lining the route that day.
Ask the pupils if these spectators would be able to see the Coronation service. Why not? These people were “eyewitnesses” to the procession only. How did these people find out about the service later? Refer back to the list on the board.
Show the photos and videos of parts of Coronation Service and explain that the only “eyewitnesses” to this were the invited guests at the Abbey. Would these people have been able to see the whole procession? Why not? How did these people find out about the procession later? Refer back to the list on the board.
Children to use newspaper writing frame to write eyewitness report.
Transfer this to computer and input suitable photos from selection.
Place Coronation in correct place on timeline

Explain who Andy Warhol was and look at some examples of his art which is based on cans eg Tomato Soup
Make a detailed picture of a food can in Warhol style
ICT Lesson. Transfer this to computer using 2paint and use it as the basis of a) simple repeated pattern b) repeat pattern with colour changes
Use 60’s music as background to main lesson
Comment on each others pictures

Look at the questionnaires returned by staff ( preprepare suitable images, soundclips etc to accompany)
Children to use the information given to make a list of differences and similarities between adults lives as children and their own lives now

Discuss with the children the impact that technology developed since 1948 has had on their lives
Brainstorm things that they would not have been able to do pre 1948 – how would they have managed some of these things instead – e.g letters, newspapers, cinema, phone, photos
Worksheet. Draw and write about 2 – 6 technological advances that did not exist pre 1948. Decide how they could have managed or what they might have done instead.
Look at children’s work and discuss how they feel about the changes

Children to choose one of these decades. Identify what they remember about significant events. Say what they would have liked to have done during that decade and why they would have chosen to live there. Note any things that they would not have enjoyed compared to the present day
Children to show own work and give their reasons for having chosen that decade.
