Before Reading
Build Background:
Ask the students to share things that they are afraid of. Make a class list. Tell them that Scaredy Squirrel is afraid of many things. Read the e-book to find out what they are.
Build Vocabulary:
Make sure the students have an understanding of these words or phrases.

During Reading
1. Listen and follow along with the e-book on automatic mode with the sound on for enjoyment.
2. Next, read along chorally with the e-book on automatic mode with the sound off.
3. Read the book chorally this time with the e-book in manual mode with the sound on. Stop and discuss each page.
For younger children:
Math Review--On the pages where clock faces are shown, use manipulative clocks and have the students actually show the time on their clocks.
List all of Scaredy Squirrel’s fears.
4. With partners, have the children read the e-book on manual mode with the sound off. Have partners choose either A or B. Partner A begins.
5. Finally, have the students read the e-book individually on the manual mode with the sound off.
After Reading
1. For younger children:
Do this as a class, using a large tablet sheet, a SmartBoard, or a dry erase board. With the help of the students, write out the daily schedule for your class.
2. For older students:
Have the students to develop their own daily schedules on separate pieces of paper.
3. If you made an emergency kit, what items would you include?
Ask the class to tell what items they think would be necessary. List these items.
4. In case of emergency: review what your class would do in case of an emergency in your school.
5. What is the exit plan for your class in case of an intruder or a natural disaster?
6. Scaredy Squirrel overcame most of his fears. Ask the students to share how they overcome their fears?
7. How did Scaredy Squirrel overcome his fears?
8. At the end of the story, why didn’t Scaredy Squirrel want to pick up his emergency kit?
