Philosophy for Student Nurse Education
At Lochgelly Health Centre we aim to provide student nurses with an holistic learning experience to enable a comprehensive understanding of patient care in a community setting. We practise team mentorship and encourage students to ask questions, however, we also expect students to assist with their own learning by developing a questioning approach and practising self-directed learning. Together, with the student, we will plan a programme of learning appropriate to the students’ individual learning needs and programme requirements. We will encourage students to discuss their learning needs and experience of the placement and look forward to hearing their views and suggestions on how we can improve the learning experience for future students. At the end of the placement students will be given an evaluation questionnaire to complete and forward to the Practice Education Facilitator (P.E.F).
We will:
- Treat students as individuals acknowledging their needs and encouraging their participation in formulating care management plans.
- Encourage students to feel part of the team by involving them in assisting and directing healthcare professionals in providing patient care.
- Recognise and value the contribution of all students in the process of planning and carrying out patient care and assist them to achieve/maintain knowledge and skills in order to provide safe and holistic care.
AIM
We will endeavour to provide a varied learning experience for all student nurses when they join our team. They will be introduced to a wide range of practitioners within the community setting to ensure that they gain an understanding of the multidisciplinary team at work; opportunities to work alongside each of these members will be sought to clarify each individual’s role and function within the team.
We hope that with our continued support and guidance that all student nurses placed with us will grow in confidence becoming more effective practitioners and as a result will also feel a valued member of our team.
