I am extremely honored to be a candidate for President-Elect of this prestigious organization that has as its noble mission to promote “the study and teaching of Hispanic, Luso-Brazilian, and other related languages, literatures, and cultures at all educational levels.” Its vibrant website underscores that the AATSP is a dynamic, financially viable association with over 9,000 members and an impressive list of publications, programs, and activities, e.g., Hispania, Enlace, Portuguese Newsletter, Chapters, advocacy efforts, awards/scholarships/ stipends, SSH, SHA, National Spanish Examination (NSE), National Portuguese Examination, ELL Poster Contest, among others.
Regarding my qualifications for the position, I have been a proud and dedicated member of the AATSP for over 25 years, serving as a member of the Executive Council (2004-2006), NSE Test Development Director (1993-1998), and presenter at every AATSP Conference since 1987. I also have extensive experience in administration, having served as Dean and Assistant Provost at the Defense Language Institute, where I am currently Associate Provost.
If elected, I will continue the fine traditions of the past and investigate ways to improve operations. I will work to promote ever greater communication across the different sectors—K-12, junior college, and university—so its constituents have increased fora where they can articulate their needs and the AATSP can address those needs. I am confident the administration and membership, working together with common goals, can ensure the AATSP maintains and enhances its status as one of the premier language organizations in the world.
