K-3 Formative Assessment Process

The K-3 Formative Assessment supports teaching and learning in the early grades by helping teachers, students, and families understand what each student knows and can do so they can grow and achieve to their fullest.

WHATis it?

  • It is a research based approach.
  • The process begins at kindergarten and continues through third grade.
  • It is NOT a test.
  • Through extensive input from parents, teachers, principals, and other educators, it was created to inform teachers about individual student progress so teachers can do what they do best – create teaching strategies to support the needs of each and every child.
  • And probably most importantly, the process focuses on development of the whole child.

HOWdoesitwork?

The teacher gathers child-specific information through observation during the course of regular instruction – and through the input of parents and caregivers who know the child so well. Children aren’t given traditional one-time or even periodic tests. Instead, the process tells the teacher what each child knows and the next steps to take. The teacher can ensure that each child progresses from where they are at the moment. It’s an ongoing approach that promotes immediate and ongoing adjustments to instruction and learning.

Children receive individual attention and personalization in learning. For every child going into kindergarten and first, second, and third grades, teachers need input from parents and their previous teachers. This process ensures that children aren’t judged just by a list of grades they’ve received on their report cards. This continuum of information will help inform future teachers’ work with this child.

WHYisitimportant?

Children learn at different rates. We must work effectively with children from the day they enter kindergarten if we want them reading well and achieving other key goals by the end of third grade.Support for strong educational outcomes costs less than remediation. We must meet each child where they are and move forward together.
