Unit of Inquiry:Unit B Earth ScienceQuarter:2 week 6

Inquiry into: Weathering and Erosion

State Learning Outcomes:2.A.2a

Science Chapter 8 Lesson 3 T.E. pg. 230-233 Scaffolded Questions pg. 231-233

Essential Question(s): How do forces cause change?

What is weathering and erosion?

Objective: The student will recognize, explain and compare how physical weathering and erosion causes changes to the Earth’s surface in order to investigate and describe how weathering wears down the Earth’s surface with water, ice and wind.

Time Requirements: (# and length of class periods needed to complete this lesson) 90 minutes

Materials/Resources needed: (consumable and non-consumable?) empty peanut butter jars, croutons, sugar cubes, science books, lcd projector, computer

ENGAGE—How will IENGAGE the students, front load info. and help them make connections to prior knowledge? / Students will take Weathering and Erosion Pre-test see attatched (
EXPLORE—What will the students do to EXPLORE the concepts and begin to develop vocabulary? / Whole class will discuss their background knowledge of weathering and erosion. We will create a K-W-L chart as a whole group

EXPLANATION-

What will I do to guide the students in constructing their own meaning and understanding of the concepts? / Students will complete the activity Only the strong survive and complete the table for the activity in their small groups (see attached sheet Only the strong survives activity sheet)

ELABORATE—

What opportunities will I give students to extend or further develop their understanding of the concepts? / Students will then come back together as a whole group and discuss the activity and what they think it has to do with weathering and erosion. They will then read pgs. 230-233 in their science textbooks and answer the questions on page 231 and 233 with a partner. Then students will watch the short clip, Study jams weathering and erosion (see attached youtube clip). Students will complete the K-W-L chart with their partner

EVALUATE—

How will I or the student EVALUATE the learning that has taken place? / Individually students will complete an exit ticket about weathering and erosion (see attached sheet)
