Component Summary
The purpose of this unit is to introduce learners to clothing design. They will learn about media that can be used to explore design and ways that fabrics can be used to make garments. They willalso learn how to develop and follow a design brief.

Standard 1
Learners will:
Know about clothing design
Learnersshould know:
a. / Media that can be used for visualexploration in fashion design
b. / Different ideas that are used in the fashion industry
c. / Different types of fabrics that canbe used in fashion design
d. / How different fabrics affect the lookand handle of a garment
Assessment:
This standard is assessed internally by the centre and externally verified by AIM Awards. Please read this guidance in conjunction with Appendix 1 - A Guide to Assessing AIM Awards Qualifications.
The following assessment methods can be used in the assessment of this standard:
  • Observation of learner practical ability
  • Written tasks/questions and answers
  • Oral questions and answers
  • Group discussion
  • Written or pictorial information

For 1.a, learners should identify media that can be used for visual exploration in fashion design
For 1.b, learners should state different ideas that are used in the fashion industry
For 1.c, learners should identify different types of fabrics that can be used in fashion design
For 1.d, learners should state how different fabrics affect the look and handle of a garment

Be able to follow a design brief
Learnersshould be able to:
a. / Identify the key principles of a design brief
b. / Produce a theme or mood board to reflectthe given design brief
c. / Use a simple design concept in relation tothe given design brief
d. / Create a production sketch
