Course Description:
This course builds on skills and techniques developed in Studio Graphic Design. You will refine their visual design problem-solving skills through the use of Adobe digital graphic design software. You will learn the basics of successful design through the use of the elements of art and principles of design. You will manage design projects and work collaboratively to create logos, packaging, and various graphic design promotional pieces and publications. Emphasis will be placed on exploration and innovative uses of software tools, basic software imaging information, building a portfolio, and developing drawing skills. Also incorporated in the course will be employability skills such as portfolio preparation, job interviewing, artist statements and resumes.
General Course Expectations
You will use Adobe Illustrator and other digital applications to explore typography, layout, advertising and logo design. You will apply various digital techniques to create work addressing theme and specific design concerns. You will use their process journals to collect technical information, identify vocabulary terms, and develop plans to solve design problems, synthesizing the skills you have gained from previous learning. You will use your journals, project rubrics and blog posts to self-assess and peer-assess your project work. You will summarize your process, and use visual art terms and graphic design vocabulary to critique your work, and the work of your peers. You will interpret the effective use of the elements of art and principles of design in your work.

Course Fees/Supplies
There is a $35 fee for this class. Student sketchbook will be provided; sketchbook to be brought to class each day the class meets.
Grading:
In accordance with District Policy, marks indicating achievement which meet standards for receiving credit will be: A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D. F
Using the State 11 point Grade Table, GPA's will be calculated on the following basis:
A =4.0 A-=3.7 B+=3.3 B =3.0 B-=2.7 C+=2.3 C =2.0 C-=1.7 D+=1.3 D =1.0 F =0.0
Attendance and Participation:
You will need to be present in order to fully participate in course curriculum. We will have periods that are devoted to discussion, critique, or demonstrations. During this instructional time, all electronic devices will need to be put away, unless they are part of the lesson.

Attendance and punctuality are extremely important so that you will be able to participate in oral presentation, class discussions, and projects. You are responsible for all missed work due to absences. Due to the nature of having to work with materials in the art room, you will have 3 days to turn in late work for an excused absence. You can make up your work after school or by appointment with Mrs. Mintz.
Late work (excluding excused absences) IS NOT accepted.If exceptions are made (with instructor approval), there will be a grade point reduction of 80% in the first week after the project deadline. Students have ample class time to work on projects, and you will earn leadership/participation points each day. Please talk to me if you continuously have difficulty keeping up with projects so we can create an individual work plan.
- Professionalism/Employability Standards: Employability skill development for all students is a required, integral part of all College and Career Readiness (CCR) instructional programs. Traits such as punctuality, reliability and teamwork are especially valued by CCR courses due to their importance in the global workplace. Students need to be present to fully participate in course curriculum
- Leadership Standards:Leadership skill development for all students is also a required, integral part of all College and Career Readiness (CCR) instructional programs. CCR students are required to develop leadership skills by effectively participating in teams, taking a lead role where possible in group projects, and participate in the classroom and school community.
Course Policies
You must complete all projects to receive a passing grade in this course. Each assignment is important because it builds your understanding of a concept or skill and gives you the opportunity to use these skills to create your own unique design work.
No eating or drinking (besides water bottles) is allowed in the classroom. You are expected to work exclusively on graphic design projects during class time. You may only work on other class assignments during class with specific permission from Mrs. Mintz.
Community Expectations, Safety and Routines
You will be working with shared art materials in this class. These materials are a gift for you to use during this class, and are something you share with every student in this course. The expectation is that you will take great care of each art tool and shared material. You will also be expected to follow any safety procedures with art tools and materials. If you misuse any tool, or fail to follow safety procedures, you will lose your privilege to use it for a specified time period, which may lead to your failure in this course.
Studio Time
The majority of class time will be spent on your independent projects. Since we have a variety of learners in our art studio, some students need silence to work, while others will need interaction or movement. It is critical that we have a respectful community that ensures everyone an opportunity for success. I will do my best to facilitate a fair and positive learning environment for all. During independent work time, you may be allowed to listen to music on your iPod under these conditions: the volume on your headphones is at a low level (so your classmates cannot hear your music), and you must put away your device at least five minutes before the end of class (or at any time as requested by Mrs. Mintz) so you are ready for closure.
Clean-up and Closure
The last five to eight minutes of class are for cleaning up and for our “proper goodbye.” Everyone is responsible for cleaning up their own work area, and returning any supplies to their appropriate place. Every student must take ownership in the operation and condition of our studio. Be prepared for proper goodbye: all belongings put away in your bag; seated, silent, and open-minded as we discuss closure for the day.
Plagiarism Policy:
All work must be your own. Anyone using work of another student or copying will receive a failing grade for the class.
