League Rules and Regulations

The following rules and regulations were discussed at the pre-season league meeting and reflect the idiosyncrasies that the Women’s Mountain League has developed over the past 20 years. If there are any questions about any of these rules, please talk with the captain of the opposing team before each game to clarify any misunderstandings.

  1. A pitch must have an arc of between 6 and 12 feet. It is up to the discretion of the umpire as to the approximate height of a pitch. A pitcher will receive a warning (no pitch) for the first flat pitch and all subsequent flat pitches are to be called balls. A batter may always choose to swing at a flat pitch if they so wish.
  1. The infield fly rule is in effect. It states “an infield fly is a fair ball, not including a line drive, which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort when 1st and 2nd or 1st, 2nd and 3rd bases are occupied before two are out. Any fielder can catch an infield fly.”
  1. Sliding is encouraged but not mandatory when there are close plays at 2nd, 3rd and home bases. It’s up to the umpire’s discretion whether there is offensive or defensive player interference during a close call. The goal for all players is to avoid collisions and injuries at all times.
  1. Bunting is allowed.
  1. Stealing is allowed but a base runner may not leave a base before the pitch has crossed home plate.
  1. There is free substitution but a player must remain out of the game for at least six consecutive outs, i.e., one complete inning, before returning to the game. If a player is injured while running the bases and needs a substitute, and there are no extra players available, then the substitute should be the person who made the last out in the previous inning. There are no “courtesy runners” unless there is agreement by both teams to allow them prior to the game’s start.
  1. Each team can have an extra hitter (EH) in their lineup, i.e., the person bats but does not field, and can have a designated hitter (DH), i.e., a person not on the field who is also not the extra hitter can hit in place of someone in the field. EH’s and DH’s must be included in the lineup prior to the first pitch of the game.
  1. There is no dropped third strike rule.
  1. A player must play in 50% or 6 of the games in order to be eligible for the tournament. Exceptions to this rule may be discussed at the pre-tournament meeting.
  1. Base coaches must be a player who is on the roster, but is not necessarily a player in the game, i.e., a player who is hurt can still coach a base.
  1. Each team should identify a team representative who will represent the team at meetings, in rules discussions, etc.
  1. Five innings constitutes a complete game. A game that is less than 5 innings may be suspended because of weather and may then be completed at a future date that is agreed to by both teams. Decisions about whether a game should be suspended, temporarily interrupted, or canceled should be made by the representatives of each team in conjunction with the umpire.
  1. If one team is ahead by 15 runs after 5 innings the game is over. If both teams agree, play may continue for an entire regulation game. In tournaments, if one team is ahead by 10 runs after 5 innings the game is over.
  1. Either team may appeal a call by the umpire.
  1. The home team is responsible for supplying the game ball which is to be a non-restricted

flight ball lower than .5

  1. Only ASA approved bats may be used. No “corked” or “hot” bats.

17.Shirts are required as part of all players’ uniforms.
