Campus Involvement Assignment
Each student is required to attendtwo campus activities outside of class. Acceptable events are limited to: Good Thunder Reading Series, Art/Music Department Events, ISO/ Institutional Diversity Cultural Events, Kessel Peace Institute, Women’s Center/ Women’s Studies, Theatre/ Dance/Performing Arts events. This assignment will challenge you by creating opportunities for University Diversity involvement at MSU.
Each student will write a 3-page reflection paper for each activity attended.
In each reflection paper, the following questions should be addressed in descriptive detail:
- What is my perception of this event?
- What did I learn from this event that I did not know before?
- What was this event trying to say to students at MSU?
4. What did the event say to me about myself?

Pre-conference events will be held September 18 and the conference will follow all day on September 19.There will be presenters discussing a variety of topics including culture, language, history, education, tribal government and others that relate to Native Americans and Alaska Natives.This event is offered in conjunction with Education:KSP 4/590 which may be taken for credit.Classes and individuals are welcome to attend individual sessions at no cost; however if you would like to attend the majority of the conference you must register and pay the conference fee.
Mahkato 36th Annual Traditional Wacipi

The Mahkato Mdewakanton Association, Dakota Indian communities of Minnesota and the Dakotas host a traditional Wacipi that attracts American Indian participants and visitors from throughout the United States and Canada.

South Asian Night has been a tradition at Minnesota State Mankato since 1993.The night follows a dinner-entertainment format.
There are performances ranging from songs and plays to dances and video projections.Students also cook indigenous meals for the attendees using spices native to their homelands.
This is an opportunity to project one’s own culture to others and break stereotypes.It is also a time for the community of South Asian students to come together and share the message of tolerance, friendship and harmony among themselves.We also have students from other schools come to Minnesota State Mankato to watch us perform and in turn, our students get invited to perform at these universities at their events.Go to for more information.
November is National Native American & Alaska Native Heritage Month
What began at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the First Americans made to the establishment and growth of what is now the United States has resulted in the month of November being designated for that purpose.
National Native American & Alaska Native Heritage Month is celebrated to recognize the intertribal cultures and to educate the public about the heritage, history, art and traditions of the First Americans.Watch for activities throughout the month.
