Wetlands Destruction Permit Revision for Proposed Grand Parkway, Segment E, Toll Road, Needs Public Comments

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) is requesting public comments on a proposed, revised, wetlands Section 404 permit (SWG-1997-02901 (Rev.) for the one-half billion dollar Grand Parkway, Segment E, Toll Road (U.S. 290 to I-10). This project will destroy wetlands on the Katy Prairie and would be built by Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA).

The Corps has only given two weeks for public comment! Your letter against this destructive project is needed now. Send your letter to the Corps via letter, fax, or email by August 24, 2010. State in your letter:

1. You request a 30-day public comment period for SWG-1997-02901 (Rev.) and object to the inadequately short two-week public comment period.

2. You request that a public hearing be held on this project.

3. You object that mitigation for the loss of native tall-grass prairie/prairie pothole wetlands is proposed 30 miles away in the out-of-ecosystem, out-of-watershed, and out-of-kind Greens Bayou Wetland Mitigation Bank instead of on the Katy Prairie in the Cypress Creek or Upper Buffalo Bayou Watersheds.

4. You support the revision of the wetlands mitigation plan (which has not occurred) for this project with full public notice and comment.

5. You oppose the destruction of wetlands on the Katy Prairie which protect water quality, reduce flooding, and provide protection for wildlife. You oppose permit application no. SWG-1997-02901 (Rev.) and request that the Corps with-draw and reject this permit.

Send your comments by August 24, 2010 to: Mr. Dwayne Johnson, Regulatory Branch, CESWG-PE-RB, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, P.O. Box 1229, Galveston, Texas 77553-1229; or fax to 409-766-3931; or email to .

Send this fact sheet to as many people as you can so that we bury the Corps in public comments by August 24, 2010. For more information contact Brandt Mannchen at 713-664-5962 or .
