Welcome to The Punchbowl Inn at Askham.
The Punchbowl Inn sits contently at the bottom of Askham Village Green. This quaint village proudly nestled above the River Lowther is a stone’s throw from the historic Lowther Castle which was once the proud family home of the Earl of Lonsdale. The Castle towers majestically over the valley at the centre of its formal gardens and deer park.
It was in the late 18th century that The Punchbowl Inn began its life. Before the grand castles at Lowther had even been built, the Punchbowl sat conveniently above an ancient crossing of the River Lowther. Trade was bustling with traveller’s on a busy pack horse route which ran from the fort town of Penrith through what is now Haweswater valley, up into the Lake district mountains, along Nan Beild Pass and down to the great market town of Kendal.
From humble beginnings as a Farm orchard, the Punchbowl developed into a busy Inn and ale house in thebuildings you see today.
Today the same homely welcome is extended to the modern weary traveller, although we now scale the fells for pleasure rather than passage! The same open fires, ales and homecooked food can still be found.
